Naissance d’une mannequin

Sous l’objectif de la photographe Manuela Pavesi, la top-model américaine Ehren Dorsey, en escale parisienne pour «Next», dévoile la beauté solaire et androgyne de ses 20 ans.


L’élégance, on ne sait pas trop ce que c’est. Peut-être est-ce Kate Moss prise en photo par Corinne Day, souriante, en 1990, pour The Face, plumes d’Indiens sur la tête. Ou ces deux jeunes parisiennes, si jolies, devant le métro Solférino.
Ou peut-être est-ce Ehren Dorsey, photographiée par Manuela Pavesi ce dimanche-là d’hiver. Les tenues défilent, à un moment des plumes surgissent aussi, bien plus sombres. «Je déteste le “cute”, raconte la photographe italienne. Il faut qu’elle ait l’air d’une femme forte et indépendante.» La séance a été réalisée au Polaroid. «C’est très moderne, c’est l’instantanéité.» Aucune retouche. «On n’a pas travaillé avec Ehren comme avec les autres mannequins, qui parfois se ressemblent toutes. Elle a un visage particulier, on l’a traitée comme une actrice», ajoute Manuela Pavesi.
Entre deux prises, Ehren Dorsey attend, assise contre le mur blanc imparfait, éclairée par la lumière du jour qui décline petit à petit. Des vieux Trotec bleus soufflent un air chaud dans sa direction. Elle voit qu’on grelotte, elle nous dit de nous approcher.
Repérée dans le Missouri
Vingt ans, née dans le Kansas, elle n’est mannequin que depuis août 2011. «Tout est allé si vite. J’étais serveuse, un photographe m’a demandé si je posais, je l’ai regardé bizarrement: évidemment, non.» Elle accepte de le suivre, une semaine après elle est à New York. Aujourd’hui, elle vit à Londres et commence à poser pour les magazines anglo-saxons les plus reconnus. Mais, dit-elle, «tout tient dans une valise, je n’ai pas vraiment de chez moi».
Famille très chrétienne, jeunesse dans la grande banlieue résidentielle de Saint-Louis, Missouri. De cet «American way of life», elle garde un léger mal du pays, l’envie d’adopter huit enfants et la manie d’accorder «****» à toutes les sauces. Elle sait néanmoins que sa vie a changé. «La plupart des membres de ma famille vivent dans des fermes, ils ne comprennent pas ce que je fais, ils pensent que je suis célèbre sans savoir pourquoi», note-t-elle. Sans parler de ses parents. «Mon père est sceptique, il a l’impression que je suis tout le temps nue, que c’est un peu de la prostitution. Et, sur les autres aspects de ma vie, comme la bisexualité, il fait comme s’il ne le savait pas.»
Ehren Dorsey, visage androgyne, revendique ses cheveux courts qu’elle prévoit de raser à nouveau. Elle «aime le monde de la mode», mais voudrait «bien le changer un peu» : «Pendant longtemps, on a surtout mis en avant des beautés classiques. S’il peut y avoir des standards différents, c’est bien. Montrer que l’on peut à la fois avoir les traits d’une femme et ceux d’un homme.»
Trois tatouages, dont un sur l’avant-bras, des chiffres pour rappeler Auschwitz, qui «symbolisent tous les génocides». Un autre, dans le cou, le logo du danger biologique, pour soutenir les hémophiles touchés par le scandale du sang contaminé aux Etats-Unis. Une petite tendance à vouloir sauver le monde? Elle sourit, lève un peu le poing: «Oui, moi toute seule.»

Dans un des cafés de la rue Saint-Dominique, après le shooting, elle confie qu’elle aimerait travailler longtemps dans l’univers de la mode, continuer à être une infime partie de toute cette organisation créatrice, mais qu’un jour elle voudra publier un livre. De poésie. «Noire», évidemment. Sur un petit morceau de papier, elle écrit l’adresse de son site web, où elle poste ses poèmes, mais «il ne faut pas le dire», c’est un «secret». On lui conseille de profiter de Paris pour découvrir des poètes français peu connus. Roger Gilbert-Lecomte ou René Daumal, du mouvement Le Grand Jeu, par exemple.
