Crazy things happen on spring break, but what happened to Erin Bubley is totally insane.

Crazy doesn't do justice to her extreme makeover from Erin Bubley, Niles North role model, to Erin Heatherton, New York City fashion model.

She's still only 17. Had chance not butted in, she would still be living in Skokie and worrying about college applications, basketball and her prom dress.

Instead she's doing magazine spreads and shows, and kids could wind up looking at pictures of her to figure out what they should wear to prom.

This defies rational explanation, as Bubley herself acknowledged the other day by phone from her new home in midtown Manhattan.

"It was kind of fate," she said.

It certainly wasn't what she had in mind when she joined a friend and the friend's mother for a trip to Miami. They were checking out South Beach when a man jumped out of a cab and chased Bubley down.

"All of a sudden he's asking me questions. What agency was I with?" she said. "I almost fainted."

Bubley had been approached once before about modeling, but this guy, an agent scouting for prospects, seemed serious and all but promised her work that summer in New York.

She was properly suspicious. So were her parents, Laura and Mark, but when they checked out the offer and it seemed legit, Erin faced a major decision: modeling or basketball.

Hoops would have seemed the obvious winner. Bubley was 5 feet 11 inches, had good skills and had started for Niles North the previous winter.

Beneath the surface, though, all was not what it seemed. Bubley is a perfectionist, and although she has excelled at almost anything she tried, excellence wasn't always enough.

That was particularly true in basketball, where she beat herself up so thoroughly over mistakes that Niles North coach Joel Kessler would urge her "to take off the boxing gloves."

"Erin has always been harder on herself than anyone else could be," he said.

That had led to a stress-packed junior year in which, Bubley, one of the top students in her class, drove herself to produce grade-A performances on and off the court.

"It got to the point I would stress out so much over school it would affect basketball, and then I wouldn't play as well and I'd get stressed over that," she said. "I was dying. I didn't know whether my senior year I'd be able to take it."

That's part of what made modeling so appealing, especially because Bubley didn't plan to play college basketball. Still, she believed that choosing modeling would rule out a senior season of hoops because she would miss North's summer basketball program.

"So I had to make a decision," she said. "Should I take this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity or go to basketball camp?

"You work your entire life for your senior year of high school. It was a tossup. I just decided I wanted to take the opportunity and go."

Bubley and her mother left for New York in mid-June. They spent two days making the rounds of modeling agencies, a scene she described as "surreal" as one after another wanted to sign her.

"It was like my life completely turned upside down in one day," she said. "It was so ridiculous I was giggling between appointments.

"They were talking about my 'career.' It was just so weird."

Bubley signed with the Marilyn Agency, one of the top agencies in New York. Her mom returned home, satisfied with Erin's living arrangement, in which she rooms with two other models, with two adults supervising, and confident that she could handle New York.

"Of my four kids, she is the most independent," said Laura Bubley, who talks to Erin two or three times a day. "She has always been a very bright kid and stayed out of trouble.

"As long as she stays safe and makes good choices we can't really complain."

Bubley, who turned her middle name, Heather, into a more model-like surname, was an immediate hit in the fashion world and soon realized she had more than a summer job on her hands.

She hasn't been home once but has not had a pang of homesickness, perhaps because she has loved New York from the moment she arrived.

"The energy of the city and the people I have met made me really happy," she said. "Every day is new and fresh, and I don't know what will happen.

"I can't even sleep in. My body won't let me."

That doesn't mean life is easy. Bubley puts in long days running from one appointment to the next, either working or drumming up work.

It's an unending procession of bookers and hair and makeup artists and photographers and posing, but she works at it and loves it, even if she still isn't used to 6-inch heels.

"It's very mentally stressful to have people looking at you, always judging," Bubley said. "I'm lucky I'm secure enough it's not a problem for me.

"I love it the challenge. I learn something every shoot. But the thing I love most about modeling is you get to meet amazing new people every day."

In the last four months, Bubley has posed for the likes of Vogue and Italian Elle magazines, done a Diane von Furstenberg show and traveled to London and Los Angeles. A major trade publication recently included her on a list of modeling "up-and-comers."

"She's a gorgeous All-American model with a twist," Marilyn agent Eric Schandel said. "The most important thing is her personality is completely effervescent and contagious.

"She just has that 'it' factor."

Bubley hopes to parlay "it" into a long-term career. She is getting the handful of credits she needs for her high school degree through correspondence work and plans to attend college, although she likely will mix that with modeling and pursue a major that will help her in the fashion industry.

"Ever since I've been here, I've never been so happy and never felt so comfortable," she said. "It's where I want to be, there's no other way to put it."

She's a very down feet earth girl Thanks so much for the amazing article, i can't wait to see more of her work. ''Bubley, who turned her middle name, Heather, into a more model-like surname, was an immediate hit in the fashion world and soon realized she had more than a summer job on her hands.''
Erin Bubley, hugh? I don't think it sounds bad, even though Heatherton is cool. I like it. But i don't think i would change my name...
