Seventeen-year-old Kate King likes to read. “I read like crazy,” she says. Discovered at age 13 in New York, King grew up outside of Toronto in Mississauga—like Daria Werbowy. As her senior year comes to a close, her modeling career is taking off. She’s walked for everyone in New York, Paris and Milan including Marc Jacobs, Proenza Schouler, Michael Kors, Prada, Alexander Wang, Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Dior. Steffano Gabbana has announced King—along with Isabeli Fontana, Maryna Linchuk and Liu Wen—as Dolce & Gabbana’s fall faces. The Canadian newcomer believes “less is more” when it comes to beauty, and desires accomplishments to help children’s charities. Her life’s motto: “Success is humbling.”
Casting Agent Natalie Joos meets up with some of her favorite discoveries for a face to face chat.
When Kate King walked into my pre-casting for Fashion Week FW11, my tireless attention shifted. She was this tall, mousy, shy girl who reminded me of Ruby Aldridge. But she had a strong, rare kind of beauty, great hair and her walk was flawless. I added her to my “obsessions” list for Fashion Week and pointed her out to all of my clients, but none were sold on her. So when Stylecaster.com asked me to list my favorite new faces of the season, I gave her a prominent spot in the list and also sent her to shoot with Skye Parrott for a new faces story for Dossier. If none of my clients wanted her for the shows, at least I got to give her some nice shout-outs. Looking back at her season now, Kate King rocked (quietly), and stole everyone’s heart on a steady pace—as far as Paris. She recently shot the new Dolce & Gabbana campaign with Steven Klein and she was the only new girl in a group of 6 very established girls (Isabeli, Maryna Lynchuk, Constance, Liu Wen and Jac). Last week she came to my office for a quick chat and some funny pictures.

Dossier, the biannual from Brooklyn that’s printed in Iceland, recently released its seventh issue, which according to editor Katherine Krause and creative director Skye Parrott does not have an official theme save “creativity as a means for social change.” To that end androgyny and, yes, losing one’s virginity loom large in the spring issue, which also includes a fine portrait of Ford’s newest charge, Kate King, photographed by Skye Parrott. The issue’s fashion editorials by nine different creative teams are organized [shuffled? -- editor] in one large portfolio, which is a bit confusing, but obviously done as a means to rejigger the existing social order, so it’s cool. The portraits also are shot in basic studios without any props, the net effect of which unifies what might otherwise be a completely formless exercise by nine different photographers. Kate looks resplendent wearing a Heidi Bivens-styled look comprised of an Opening Ceremony dress, Marc Jacobs cardigan, and Dominic Jones earrings. All told, the portrait is a fine cameo for Dossier and whets appetite for what will surely be more Kate King.
Here is a new model to keep your eye on. This Canadian stunner has the perfect measurements for clothes! This newcomer was in high demand this season. Some of the shows she walked include Dior, YSL, Louis Vuitton and Miu Miu. She is known for her perfect runway proportions, her well defined facial features and her "brown hair+green eyes" combination. I am looking forward to seeing her upcoming print ads.
