Very strange that she was at Burberry. To be truthful, her career is going downhill right now so it's weird how when her career was rising, she didn't book the show but now she did.

Lara Mullen: from Altar Server of the Year 2005 to top model
We catch up with teenage catwalk sensation Lara Mullen - the model who swapped the classroom for the catwalk - after our India shoot.
BY ELLIE PITHERS | 09 MARCH 2013

Lara Mullen, 18, is British modelling's hot property. She was spotted at a gig near her home in Northampton in August 2011, and two weeks later was on a plane to New York for the spring/summer 2012 shows - but not before she had completed her Duke of Edinburgh's award. 'I did my gold award in Derbyshire, went to a casting in London and then got on a plane to New York the next day. I had never been out of Europe before, so it was a bit of a shock,' she says with characteristic understatement. She has since walked in shows for Prada, Givenchy, Dior, Dolce & Gabbana and Alexander Wang, and fronted campaigns for Topshop, Maje and Coach. She lives in Maida Vale, north London.

Personal style I have quite classic style and go for simple things. I like wearing what no one else might have, so I scour charity and vintage shops in the Notting Hill area of London. I absolutely love Margaret Howell - I have a navy duffel coat by her which my American friends say makes me look very British.

School I don't feel I missed out on school, but I do think I grew up faster than everyone else there. When I first started modelling all my friends were really excited and would live-stream my shows in the common room, but now it's become normal. They didn't really understand how exhausting it is modelling at fashion week. They thought I was just sitting around waiting. So I took some friends with me for a day in London and then they realised how intense it is.

First sho My first catwalk show was Alexander Wang spring/summer 2012 in New York. It was my first time in heels - my mum would never let me wear them for fear of my breaking my neck - and if you watch the video you can see me wobble. I think I had heard of Alexander Wang before, but probably got him confused with Vera Wang, whose show I also walked in that week.

Prada In my first season at Milan I was an exclusive for Prada, which means that I walked solely for Mrs Prada. It's a big deal; it can make a model's career. I always worry when I'm optioned for Prada, because even when all the models are in the final line-up, you can still be cut. You are not safe until Mrs Prada has given you a hug and said, 'You're on' - then you get out of that door and on to the runway as fast as you can in case she changes her mind and physically pulls you back.

Gisele During my first season in Paris I was doing a rehearsal before the Givenchy show and broke my shoe. I didn't know what to do, the strap had popped off, but luckily another model yelled at the dressers to bring me a new pair. After the show I realised it was Gisele Bündchen.

Family My mum's family is from Poland, so we visited them before Christmas. My sisters, Katie, 14, and Beth, 17, had never been abroad before, and my family hadn't been in an airport for at least 10 years, so it was quite an experience. I got very stressed out because I had to get them all through the airport; my sisters can't even look after their own passports.

Travel schedule In December I did four days in Sydney, three days in London, four days in India for this shoot, 12 hours in London, one day in New York then back to London. Then I went to Paris, then Poland, then Italy, then Poland, and that was me done for Christmas. I really enjoy travelling, it's one of the best parts of my job, although I haven't quite mastered how to pack. I always pack 15 minutes before I leave. That way, I get to stay in bed for a little bit longer.

Religion I'm Catholic and I used to go to church every Sunday, but I haven't yet found one I like in London. I'm vaguely religious but not preachy. I used to be an altar server and a choir girl. In 2005 I was Altar Server of the Year at our church in Northamptonshire. I was so proud. I had a little plaque on my mantelpiece and every day I'd look at it and feel really pleased with myself.

Modelling My perspective on things has changed since becoming a model. I used to be like Anne Hathaway in that scene from The Devil Wears Prada , where a fashion assistant holds up two belts and Hathaway can't tell the difference. Now I'm like Meryl Streep when she goes on that massive rant about the cerulean blue jumper and the trickle-down effect of high fashion to high-street stores. Some of my friends say they're not into fashion, and I think, 'Well, you've just bought something from Primark with a rip-off of a Prada print on it.' I like researching collections, although it annoys my sister: I tell her not to buy something if it's a rip-off of a designer label.

Books I recently read Jon Ronson's The Psychopath Test and got interested in people's minds. Now I'm reading his new book, Lost at Sea , which has a chapter on the game show Deal or No Deal . [The presenter] Noel Edmonds apparently believes that if you ask the cosmos for something, you will get a response. He claims he knows when a contestant comes on the show whether they are going to win or lose. I'm not sure if university is for me right now, but these books got me thinking that I'd like to study criminology and psychology, perhaps at the Open University.

Music I'm quite into folk music. The other day I went to the Good Ship in Kilburn Road and saw my history teacher's band, Giles Likes Tea, play a gig. It's a random name but it's quite cool music. I had singing lessons at school, and got to grade six. It's a pipe dream of mine to be a pop star.

Favourite shoot I like shoots in exciting places. Once I did a shoot for AnOther Magazine in Sweden's 'most haunted house'. The crew didn't tell me it was haunted, because Annie, my model booker, and I were staying there overnight. I don't know if I believe in ghosts but there was a strange feeling. We slept with all our clothes on, the lights on and the door shut.

Favourite item of clothing I have a gold Hervé Leger evening dress, which is impressive but I've never worn it. I got it a year and a half ago but it takes a certain confidence to pull it off. I wore a blue beaded Preen dress to my school prom - I did their lookbook a while ago so it was a trade.

Holidays I don't go on holiday much but I'm looking to do a 'gap year in two weeks' this summer at an outreach programme in Fiji helping a local school. I went to Lourdes a couple of summers ago and helped look after a group of elderly people on their holiday.

Exercise I have a nice trainer called Johnny Lomax, who runs the Lomax Gym in Fulham Road. I spend a couple of hours there every day. I do Pilates, spinning classes and intense 'blast classes'. They have a café downstairs which is full of really healthy things, so I pick up lunch there.
