A fundraising coup

BRYAN ADAMS WILL PERFORM IN ST. CATHARINES FOR A BREAST CANCER BENEFIT NEXT MONTH





Canadian rock legend Bryan Adams will play the Garden City for the first time in a decade for a breast cancer benefit next month.
The famed stadium rocker played to a screaming crowd of more than 3,000 at Jack Gatecliff arena in 1998, also as a fundraiser for breast cancer screening equipment.
The cause remains the same, but this time, the guitar hero will unplug for a solo acoustic show at Bethany Community Church Sept. 3.
"I'm so excited. This is like a reunion for us," said Sandra Wilkes, executive director of the St. Catharines General Hospital Foundation.
"It should be a new experience for fans, a more intimate experience."
About 1,000 tickets will go on sale at 10 a. m. Aug. 11 for $150 each. The proceeds will help buy a new, $800,000 digital mammography unit - a more hi-tech version of the machine purchased 10 years ago.
Back then, Adams hit the stage with friend and hometown supermodel Linda Evangelista and raised $250,000.
Soon after, Niagara's first breast screening centre was named the Evangelista/Adams Centre.
Adams, who is touring in support of his new album, 11, said by e-mail Thursday he's always been impressed with the centre.
"It's really something that should be all over the country," he said. "Perhaps that is a greater goal to be considered."
Adams has devoted concerts and his photography to breast cancer fundraising for more than a decade.



"A friend of mine was diagnosed in the late stages of the disease," he said of his motivation for the charitable work.
"She didn't make it."
St. Catharines was a natural choice for a fundraiser, he said, being the hometown of Evangelista, "one of my best friends."
The supermodel isn't expected to perform this time, but she and her family are invited, Wilkes said.
Wilkes considers Adams a fundraising coup.
The singer-songwriter has sold more than 65 million records worldwide and earned superstar status with 1980's rock anthems like Summer of '69 and Kids Wanna Rock. He has also been awarded the Order of Canada and was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2006.
"I've always been and will continue to be a big, big fan," Wilkes said. "I'm just thrilled he agreed to come back."
She's even more thrilled by the prospect of upgrading the breast screening centre's technology.
The digital mammography unit is expected to "significantly shorten" the current six-week waiting list.
"It will enable us to see more patients, in a much more efficient manner," Wilkes said. "This sort of equipment is vitally important for the early detection of breast cancer."
