Naomi Campbell has paid tribute to Michael Jackson, calling him the "first global superstar."

Campbell starred in the video of the singer's 1991 track "In the Closet," and struck up a firm friendship with the King of Pop.
The beauty was devastated to learn of his passing on Thursday after he suffered a cardiac arrest -- and has paid a moving tribute to the man she calls an "all-time great."
She tells Vibe.com "I grew up with Michael Jackson, he was a good friend and the most exciting and innovative entertainer to have lived.
"No artist has connected to their audience like Michael and no one will ever be able to match what he has achieved. He gave back to people through his charity work and was an amazing father and human being.
"Michael touched people of every race, nationality, age and was the first truly global superstar. He is one of the all-time greats and his role in popular culture will never be surpassed and never ever be forgotten."
"The video is smoldering in its simplicity, and is devoid of the special effects and super-embellished wardrobe that had become his trademark, showcasing a new confidence in Michael, his hair pulled off his face in a simple straight ponytail.
"This confidence to be able to simplify and step away from what people expected from him struck a particular chord with me, at the time a young woman growing up in London, and it is something I hold true to this day. Thank you, Michael."

Thanks Ferry! And Naomi's absolutely right he was the 1st global superstar! I don't know if younger people understand it...but before there was Oprah,Jordan,Naomi,The Obama's and I guess I would put Beyonce in there since she's come up...there was MJ! We only have a handful of people like that and I'm proud that Naomi's in there. But MJ was and probably still is bigger than like all of them though. Those group of people really have shown faces of color all around the world.

Of course I love Naomi's inclusion but I probably could have named the rest of the women without you even listing them. I mean, they don't know of anyone under 30 (who isn't already established as a star) that has the "it" factor? And Lil' Kim? Really?

Hey Marla I checked it out and its just for the reason I thought it would be! Basically its more of a who's living that has & will stand the test of time! So I don't think alot of people under 30 will or at least haven't right now,jokes. So,sorry I don't think they deserve to be mentioned with like Naomi,Diana,Oprah,Michelle,Halle,Aretha,etc. Now Lil'Kim...that was stupid a choice. They could've replaced her with Queen Latifah or somebody...anybody....ELSE,jokes. But Naomi was the first person featured and the only with like 2 pages. So that was pretty cool. However,I think they spent a tad too much space on the maid issue. Hello,WE have to stop being negative towards our stars like that...especially when they do more good than bad like Naomi. I don't think they mentioned her charity work nor her other businesses. That is just beyond me,why don't they do more research,jokes?! They would've had a better more compelling story and a better list! Anyhow,I will likely be writting to them about that,Lil'Kim and their cover choice of Alicia(although I think her cover was the best).

You couldn't escape it over the weekend here in America. And yes she did hold her own with the greatest...thats pretty awesome. I remember hearing things in the media like 'oh she might be too much for MJ',jokes! Seriously,I definitely remember Naomi putting it on MJ! She really did great. Too bad I couldn't get through watching the entire video over the weekend...too many memories,emotions.
