MISS PAVLINA HATZOPOULOS
10/16/2014
Being our very first model to feature on our blog we couldn't have chosen anyone better than Miss Pavlina who is not only beautiful on the outside but is far from giving up on her dreams no matter what obstacles are put in her way. The half Italian, half Greek beauty knows what it takes to succeed and has the correct mindset and attitude to go far.

"Only dead fish follow the stream."

At only 17 years old, Pavlina Hatzopoulos has had her fair share of modelling gigs so far! From gracing the catwalks of Perth Fashion Festival to Ange Lang and even the recent exclusive show for Chalice alongside the always spectacular Styleaid. To think that she is still located in the small little industry of Perth is beyond me! However she not only has the looks, she also has the brains to follow; currently wrapping up her very first year at the University of Western Australia completing Communications and Media and Law.

With a plan to travel the globe to not only model but hopefully study over in New York for fashion her future looks nothing short of exciting!

See below our exclusive talk with the ever so sweet Pavlina!

Name: Pavlina Hatzopoulos
Age: 17
Agency: Viviens Model Management - modeling for nearly a year now

How did you get signed?
I've always been really tall so modeling is something that I thought about during my last years in High School. During my exam break last year I went to Viviens and they signed me on the spot!

Do you find being half Italian, half Greek an advantage or disadvantage in the industry?
In this industry you can’t please everyone so there will be times when clients are looking for girls with a different look than I have, but that’s just part of the job. I like that I have a multicultural look and that does appeal to many clients so I’m lucky in that way.

Do you have anyone you look up to within the industry?
I definitely look up to fellow Perth girl Jessica Gomes, as I love how she has broken some of the barriers of the modelling industry being extremely successful at what she does even though she isn’t a size 6. I love going into my agency and seeing pictures of her and Gemma Ward up on the walls and just taking in the fact that they were once in the same shoes as me and literally standing in the same room as me!!!

Do you enjoy modelling? If so what do you like about it and do you find there are any benefits that come from it?
I really do enjoy modelling - what girl doesn’t love getting their hair and makeup done and wearing clothes that I totally can’t afford! Some of the benefits are definitely being able to meet some very talented and interesting people, and I’ve made some awesome friends out of the other models. Modelling can take you all over the world so there’s also that aspect which I’m looking forward to in the future! Also my resting face is so bitchy so this is probably the only job in the world where that’s accepted.

We read your article on AMFAM and loved it! We do find there is a lack of racial diversity in the industry, do you believe there is anything that can be done to change this?
Thank you! I think it all starts with a change of attitude not just in fashion but in all aspects of life. No one is born racist, it’s something that society drums into us from quite a young age that a certain skin colour for example is somehow superior to another. So if this attitude changes then I think that it will be reflected in the fashion industry as well, and in turn not only one type of look will be considered beautiful.

Do you take criticism well? Have you ever been given criticism?
When I first started I would sometimes let criticism get to me - I wasn’t that confident and if I didn’t get a job or something like that then I would kind of beat myself up about it. I think its only been in the last 6 months that I’ve learnt to take criticism and rejection as something that pushes me further to succeed, and to not take anything personally - it’s all business and you can’t please everybody. I’ve definitely been given criticism, but there is no model anywhere in the world that hasn’t. This aspect of the job has definitely made me grow up and has given me a thicker skin, which you need with everything in life I think.

Are there any criticisms you'd give the fashion/modelling industry?
Embrace diversity, although I think the industry is slowly getting better with this with the help of some influential people in fashion. I’d also love for there to be more support behind ethical fashion houses whose means of production are environmentally friendly and do not simply exploit workers in third world countries.

Are you on a strict diet, work out plan etc. to maintain you physique?
I do make a big effort to eat healthy; avoiding starchy carbs, anything really processed and fast food, but I’m Italian so pasta is basically my God given right. I’m not naturally a huge fan of vegetables so sometimes my mum kind of forces them onto me as if I’m about 5 years old. But I find once you eat well for long enough you enjoy how good you feel and you don’t even like the nasty stuff after a while. I exercise a lot, I try to go to the gym about 4 times a week where I love doing classes like yoga and Pilates to stretch and tone or boxing or a combat class that really makes you sweat and is great cardio.

Goals, dream, aspirations for the future?
I recently watched a news segment about model Robyn Lawley and she was shooting on a beach in Mykonos and I was just like ‘Damn I wanna do that!!’ so modelling around the world is definitely my next point of focus. Eventually I’d love to study a form of Fashion Business at Parsons the New School for Design in New York and get into fashion PR, but lately I‘ve also found a knack for writing so who knows! I also get into these weird phases where I really want to runaway with the Moulin Rouge but I think I’m punching above my weight with that one.

For aspiring girls or even models what's some advice you'd give them about the industry?
Only get into the modelling industry if you can handle a fair bit of rejection and are confident with yourself, because your appearance is the centre of the job - and you’ll probably lose count of the amount of people that get to see your boobs. Have a crazy sense of determination, always be grateful to the people that help you get to where you want to be and get ready for some freakin awesome times ahead. xxx
