You might as well put Petra Nemcova’s photo next to the following words in your dictionary, so clearly has she come to personify them: Courage. Survival. Hope. Grace under pressure. And perhaps most joyfully, comeback.
The latter is indeed reason to rejoice, as the 26-year-old Czech supermodel doubted she’d ever grace the pages of a magazine again after enduring the seemingly insurmountable physical and emotional effects of the tsunami that devastated Asia in December 2004. Nemcova was swept from her hotel room in the beachside resort of Khao Lak and spent eight hours clinging to flooded tree limbs, her pelvis shattered and with no feeling in her legs, before being discovered by Thai natives. Doctors told Nemcova she might never walk again, but broken bones mattered little in the face of a broken heart: Among the thousands lost that fateful day was Nemcova’s boyfriend, British photographer Simon Atlee.
But late last fall, her pelvis fully healed, her heart still somewhat fragile, Nemcova ventured onto photo-shoot sets once again, a move she says aided her healing process. “Being on a set is like being surrounded by your family,” she says. “Everyone’s been so warm, so loving, it’s made it a lot easier.”



This spring has found Nemcova’s schedule in full swing. She was a front-row presence during February’s New York Fashion Week, looking every bit the starlet at Badgley Mischka’s fall presentation, and graces the just-released 2006 Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, her sixth appearance in the bikini-babe tome. And while tawny curves and an easy smile are enough to ensure any model’s career, Nemcova has always known she required more than that, though such a decision was made all the more resolute by a vicious wave that stormed a Thai beach and forever changed her life. She recounts her story of courage-amid-tragedy in Love Always, Petra (Warner Books, $23.95), an inspirational look at both her journey to supermodel status from the mountains of the Czech Republic and how she survived not only unimaginable physical pain, but also the loss of the man she calls the love of her life.
One way she chooses to survive: by helping to ease the pain of others. Proceeds from Love Always, Petra will go to the foundation Nemcova established, the Happy Hearts Fund, which through the relief organization Give2Asia assists children who have been orphaned or otherwise affected by the tsunami. But even with great plans for Happy Hearts, Nemcova notes that these days she looks forward only so far. “I used to live for the future,” she says, “but now it’s about where I am today, and making the best of every day that you have.” —Laurie Brookins
