I don't think they're being discriminatory because people aren't of french nationality but because people don't speak the language.

We have a lot of french speaking immigrants from Hiati and many countries in Africa and South America. They're not french but they speak french. They get on better than the people who only speak english.

actually THAT reasoning dates back from the middle ages.

montreal is not what is what in the 1960s. montrealers of my generation (i was born in '84) speak both languages fluently or a mix of the two (franglish). their names are derek tremblay or frederic Ryan.

im not saying we're living in utopia, but still.

i cringe every time i read journalists who stress the dicotomy between the french and english music community (as though Arcade Fire and the Stills didnt have francophone members) or tourist pamphlets which claim that "beware - dont talk to a francophone in english, it hurts their national pride" blah blah HELLO. welcome to Montreal 2005. where like 1/4th of the population is immigrant. where sales clerks in the Downtown Montreal (and Westmount/NDG) address you - and reply! - in english. and where the conversation automaticly switches to english when you have 5 francophones and 1 anglophone in one room.

these are the new realities.

that being said, of course there are tensions with the rest of canada. but thats a whole different story.

Not really, they had an article in the Gazette awhile back and there is a thread on it in the shopping forum. Too bad I didn't keep it, I don't remember what places exactly downtown they were interested in so far...

Canada does have an army.

Canadian troops are in Iraq and Afghanistan. The only difference is that they were sent there for humanitarian relief operations. Unlike other armies.

Canada aslo has many troops in parts of Africa for humanitarian relief purposes. It's good to know that not all armies are bad.

Again I've never actually heard that. Isn't that only in the Maritimes?

Same thing with eh, eh? I've used that a few times in my life, but only when I get tired of saying huh, or y'know, y'know? huh?

i think it is a beautiful city....
lovely atmosphere....
clean and safe....
the canal is gorgeous... quebec is nearby....

the market is gorgeous....
parliament and all the old government buildings, mixed in with the new....

the people are polite and friendly....
which is typical of most canadians, i have found....
lots of great little cafes and restaurants for a city its size....
and beautiful parks and areas of natural beauty....

i think the key is not comparing....
you have to appreciate where you are for its own beauty....
i am from sydney australia.....in my opinion, one of the most fantastic cities in the world..... and the minute i stopped comparing it to ottawa is the minute i started to love it here....

i'm sorry you're not enjoying yourself....
montreal is a great city..... but so is ottawa....
