I have a bit of a dilemma. I am in love with this Marc Jacobs handbag, which costs $795.
(I'd get it in petrol blue)

I have more than enough money, but as a college student who has been quite cheap all her life, I don't feel quite comfortable spending that much. But at the same time, I know that I'd use the bag forever.

I recently found this similar Marc by Marc Jacobs bag, which I don't like as much but is far cheaper ($198).
(I would get it in black)

Should I get the more expensive, leather version that I know I would use forever, or save my money and get the cheaper velvet one that most likely will not last me as long? When did you guys start buying expensive handbags, and how much did you spend? Help me justify spending $800 (that I know could someday go to rent, clothes, travel) on a handbag, or tell me that the $200 one will serve me just as well.

Thank you!!!

I'd go with the one you like best. Spending $200 on something your not fully happy with seems a bit wasteful if you can have something you absolutley love for $800, considering you can afford it.

Clear quality difference...I would with the first MJ bag if money is not an issue. Much classier looking than the second. Leather will last much longer and has more versitility.

if it were me, i would buy the one i really wanted. i say go for the first mj bag. i think leather would last alot longer than the velvet one. i also think the look of the first bag (the one that you really, really want) looks more timeless... the second bag looks more trendy because of the bows.
i know that you are hesitant to spend the money, since you are in college... but to me, spending $200 on a bag that you like so-so is $200 too much.

totally agree with guesgirl -- even $100 is too much for a bag you don't really like. have you tried on the first? I have and didn't like how it tends to roll because of its long and thin shape.

Thanks so much for the advice, girls! I think you're all completely correct. I'm going to wait and try on the first bag at the MJ store next week, and if I really love it as much as I think I do, then I'll probably go for it.

This board is so dangerous, I just know that you all are going to lead me down a very expensive path :p

What should my next bag be? I may be able to get one or possibly 2 in december. The ones that are hard to find I'm thinking maybe resorting to ebay, there have been some authentic stams and lanvin kansas bags, I also have a pre order placed for the spy so I'm guarenteed that unless I cancel...

red balenciaga city
lanvin vintage kansas in black
fendi spy in cognac
petrol MJ stam
chanel 2.55 black patent bag -- can post pic later on, its pretty

Just for reference of the similar bags I have, I have 2 balenciaga classiques, a petrol fendi spy, and I should be getting a grey chanel re issue soon

Any advice would be appreciated, so many bags, not enough cash :-P

Guessgirl: My favourites would be the Lanvin Kansas & Balenciaga red city.
