I love shoes, but they are usually at least $100, which is too expensive for me. Bags, on the other hand are slightly more practical and tend to cost much less.
Handbags it is then...

Well...to me both are important parts to a stylish outfit
BUTyou need shoes more..they are important because they are what you walk on so its gotta be some good comfy shoes...
the bag isn't protecting any part of my body..it simply holds my money, my phone and my make-up,which are all important to me, but it's not a nessessity like something to cover my feet.
But if I HAD to choose, I would tend towards purses. I feel that when I'm using a purse, I'm actually interacting with it (say when I take things out, put things in, carry it this way versus that way), whereas with shoes its not like that, because they stay on your feet (well most of the time anyways). My purse definitely begs more of my attention than my shoes; I feel like I have a more intimate relationship with it
spend a little money on a good bag that you love and goes with everything...carry that bag all the time...make it a signature piece...
then, you have to spend more money on shoes...because you need more of them...you can't really wear the same shoes everyday...so you need more shoes...that's where most of the money has to go...just because of quantity...but also buy shoes that you love and that go with alot of things in your wardrobe and that won't date easily...
in other words...don't buy anything too trendy or too 'of the moment' because it won't last long...if something lasts a very long time...then even if it is expensive to begin with...you will get more value from it because you will use it longer....
hence, my obssessive search for the perfect bag...

Both are important
But i think the shoes are essential cause as said Chanel : "You can be badly dressed and have beautiful shoes that will pass all the same"
I say shoes, mainly b/c I'm a guy and do not carry a handbag, but I also agree with what softgrey said, bags are more versatile, you can use them everyday if it's a classic enough style, or just cause you like it. But shoes need to be varied according to outfit, setting, weather, you know? But don't go on my opinion, as I said, I have no use for a handbag and I'm also all for frivolity, I seem to be attracted to things that are incredibly inpractical for me and shoes tend to be one of them.

A badly constructed bag is not likely to hurt you, for example...
^ What he said
And the majority of men have yet to warm up to the idea of carrying around a bag, and are still resorting to jamming up their pants' pockets with all their junk. So for them I guess bags aren't even in the equation.
