Using the included shoulder strap?
I've noticed a lot of these classic bags come with shoulder straps included, but I get the impression it's not too stylish to actually use them.

Am I understanding that right? Does using the shoulder strap "say" something in particular about the wearer?

Honestly, a lot of bags come with a shoulder strap for the older consumers... a lot of older (I mean like senior citizens) love shoulder straps...

Which is why at one of my jobs, they always included a shoulder strap with their bag designs.

some people like the bag but dont necessarily like to wear them on their arms.

I know I don't. But I also think handbags that are worn with the shoulder strap look odd so i just like shoulder or messager type bags.

Heh, maybe I am just having a hard time picturing wearing bags without shoulder straps because I have been wearing messenger bag-style bags for the last decade! I have a little one that I just "clutch" at the short handles when I take it out.

Are you supposed to put it in the crook of your arm? And if so, what do you do with your hand that is now elevated to chest level instead of hanging cooly by your side?

Luna, your avatar suggests that even the small handles can be put up on the shoulder, but I guess that means the bag itself is carried high up on your body.

PS. I bet the shoulder strap would come in handy when you find yourself having to carry something real heavy and comfort outweighs fashion... Maybe this is just me but I'll be a little uncomfortable for fashion, but I won't HURT for it (hope that doesn't mean I'm doomed to be tacky )

I always carry my handbags (except clutches) on my shoulders without the shoulder strap even if the handles are tiny and the bag is full to bursting (i have tiny arms so i guess i can get away with it). personally i don't think the shoulder straps work with most designs that originally came witout the strap.

about the crook of the arm thing...yes, i have wondered that! i've only been carrying my bags like this recently and wondered what to do with my hand that seems to stick up in the air... holding something like a cigarette box or a cell-phone makes it feel a lot more normal to be carrying the bag that way (given that i'm not a celebrity)

Agreed. Especially when most of the bags have really small shoulder straps.

Gwyneth uses the shoulder straps. I have seen her do it with two different totes. It looks great when she does it. I cant find the exact pics but here is an example.
