I did a huge clean up in my closet, trying to downsize hehe, but it's so hard! I've tried to take inventory of my things so I can fill in gaps but I need to be more disciplined.

I love the idea of having two lists: One of five essential basics, and the other of five statement pieces I'm going to try this

Such great posts in the last few days. baRose, I love your new purchases. I hope you keep having luck like that all year long. StellaMare, your idea of two purchase lists is excellent. I'm attempting to upgrade the quality and update the style of all my basic pieces while developing signature looks as well. Your concept can help me focus on both priorities at once. cosmogrl5, your lookbook has inspired me to spend more time putting mine together. salomelovesjohn, I admire how you are willing to take an analytical look at how you shop and what you buy.

May the new year bring each of us whatever we need.

Yes I agree with what is said before. if you have a good base, you can only buy 4-5 pieces. 1 pair of trousers/jeans, 1 nice sweater, 1 bag (or something like it) a nice dress and thats it.
so it must be possible but im still building on the base haha

i rearranged my digital lookbook after reading susie bubble's post on finding her sister's fashion folders on the computer. her sister had files named "slouchy and casual" for example. i liked that way of organizing and categorizing as opposed to mine, which were things like "editorials."

in redoing the categories, i've found out how i like jeans outfits to be put together, and what sort of pieces i like to be worn with skirts. it's helped me to narrow my focus when i'm shopping.

The sentiment might have been expressed thousands of time, but I love how the "Quality" as opposed to "Quantity" vibe in this thread helps me to actually contemplating my purchases. Oh, how now I ponder, think and re-think whether the style, the color etc. suits me and my lifestyle... Gone are the bingeing days
It's definitely better for my credit card , and I found that if after that I go window-shopping, am not that easily tempted anymore since I know that what I already have is *actually* better.

BTW don't know if you've read the book 'Elegance' by Mme. DARIAUX, but the principle is almost the same

floodette, I went shopping a few times in the last month and while I saw many pieces that I liked I found myself thinking "I really don't need that;" or "I wouldn't enjoy wearing it enough." It was very refreshing for me to walk around and look at all the lovely clothes I didn't feel the pull to buy.

And yes, I read 'Elegance' a few years ago. Her's was the first book or article that got me thinking about clothing as a way to enhance my own shape and self, rather than seeing a piece on a model and thinking "I want that because it looks good on her."

You're welcome! You're going to have so much fun with it and will find that it helps you find new uses for pieces that are currently in your closet.
