It depends on how short. "Short" to me is right above the knee. Anything shorter is trashy IMO, especially if you have to sit. Its passable with dark tights though.

Personally I don't think a denim skirt is a good look for the majority of people, but kudos to you if you can carry it off.

A knee length or just above one in dark or raw denim is probably the nicest.

Pencil cut too - not one of those hideous really stiff a-line ones that make you look like the sign on the door of the ladies loos!

I have a black denim a line skirt that is just above the knee and works for me when I'm in the mood to wear it just fine and I'm on the far side of 45.

knee length could be nice... but never a mini for a woman in her fourties..

^ I used to think that too, but then I saw pics of Carine Roitfield in her mini's and short dresses. The legs are supposedly the last to go. And she looks fantastic, and not muttony at all, imo. But perhaps you need a certain something to carry it off.

Otherwise, I agree that just above the knee is the most universally flattering.
