I'm glad you liked it, Tine.

Another great example:

I was feeling a little self-conscious about my black dress/brown tights combo today but this thread has reassured me!

I love those photos, Nemova, and I LOVE brown and black together. I never got the hate against the combination...I never got the hate against black and navy together, either! I think they're lovely.

i've never liked it, i ignored it was considered a rule (as i do with most of them)
until i bought a black/brown belt, wich i seldom use. recently, talking to tangerine i consciously gave it a try whilst trying to achieve a certain aesthetic, and i actually thought it looked quite good. and now i think it's like most things, if it's done "right", it looks great.

I love these, Chrissy, the girl with the black dress + brown bag in the second to last picture is my favorite, I love how simple and striking it is.
Also loved your pictures, Nemova, Bruna and the girl with the brown broques look lovely.

I often wear brown + black, I did know it was supposedly a fashion faux pas, my sister always said she'd never wear it (pretty much with the same reaction I have for a red + green combo, I admit!) but I just can't run away from it, I have too many black pieces and a soft spot for brown (esp. in accesories) so it's just all happy coincidence. :p

Loved the way Valentine Fillol-Cordier paired it here with white.

[modette.se]

Dries Van Noten has also done it pretty well in the past.

and finally, I liked this look by Proenza Schouler's pre-fall collection with two different shades of brown.

nemova and i were actually just discussing how it can be difficult to combine multiple shades of brown

but, i think that proenza schouler pic you posted is a good example of how multiple shades of brown, plus black can actually work... though i still think it's a bit of a challenge to do successfully.

i love the second dries look as well

More pics, thanks Nemova I really have a soft spot for brown oxfords, and I think Garance looks great there.

Chrissy, I agree with Mullet that second to last pic, the girl with the brown hair. She looks great

Oh Mullet those are exquisite.. And Dries did a great job there. And I love the pic of Valentine Fillol-Cordier as well. I really feel like wearing something black + brown + white tomorrow
I really think mixing different shades of brown looks quite lovely... I don't own that many brown pieces, so it's kinda hard for me to do that, but I've done it but tying two belts together in different brown shades...

Btw. Where in the world is this a no go "rule". America for sure? but where else. I ask since I've never stumbled upon it where I live.

this thread is really inspirational... i just found a pair of cosy ribbed brown tights for $10 today and i normally wear a lot of black, so i'm going to have fun with these! it's hard to pull it off but it's such a subtle look when the fabrics are varied and layered!

I've read it occasionally in magazines, but I just asked my sister and she says she learned it in a course she took on diplomat's etiquette when she was studying international affairs.. which kind of explains to me why female politicians' dress so boringly.

a couple of looks by kokosalaki.
