i've wanted a black leather jacket for quite some time (i like rick owens, see by chloe, or the ones @ topshop)- seems very timeless and cool. but i live in a suburb of l.a., where people are..a bit behind. so, i feel like i'd look sort of ridiculous, and "punk-ed" up. and if i wore it in l.a., i'd feel like one of those scene/hipsters. I don't know.
^ dare to wear the leather jacket !
if l.a is behind on it then start something new, for them but for more importantly yourself. if you're afraid of looking too "punked up" then dress it down with a floral skirt etc
its legwarmers for me...and mini skirts.
i have long legs but for some reason, I am just afraid to wear mini-skirts....they look great on me....i just don't know....

happiness...i have always had a major problem with showing my legs too...even though i know they're not bad!.....just the last few months i've experimented with wearing mini skirts with black tights underneath and it makes all the difference....i feel so much more comfortable....so i think it's the bare legs rather than the short skirt that actually makes me so nervous...maybe you could try something similar?...or leggings, as softie mentioned...
i was really inspired by some streetstyle pics of girls wearing mini skirts or dresses with tights...until then i had never really seen mini skirts look chic and NOT tacky..
here are a few examples..not all of them skirts and not all of them necessarily mini but still fairly short...

I think velvet can look cool, but I'm not sure how to do it without looking too Prince.
And shorts above the knee. They look great if you have the legs, but I don't (yet. I'm working on them.)

Some people have mentioned fur.... my thing is elephant ivory (vintage of course). I love it and want to buy it and wear it but I am afraid of people's reactions! (mostly my hippie family)

As long as it isn't a loud/purple color, velvet can be pulled off well. I think it feels great and is usually comfortable to the skin so go for it.
I personally have a black velvet blazer, looks very non prince... except for the lining it's purple. I kinda like the undercover prince feeling I get from it.
