Raw denim is much more rigid and hasn't been washed to give jeans the faded look or fake whiskering. When you wear raw denim, it shapes to your body, creating natural crases and fading (ie the area where your wallet goes). Over time the wrinkling and fading is made according to your body, and after it's been washed natural fading and whiskering happen giving your jeans a much more individual look. Plus the quality of raw denim is alot higher than your average jeans because of the material. The photos of the first page just look normal because they haven't been worn in yet.

Am I correct that Levi's 501 Shrink to Fit classics are 'dry' denim? I turn mine inside out for the first two hour soak...

Not all raw denim is rigid.. in fact every pair of raw denim jeans I own (Nudie, Denimbirds, Tsubi, Levi's) are a 98/2% cotton/spandex blend. They are just untreated after the denim is dyed and the jeans are made, whereas 'normal' jeans are treated with washes and distressing to create a pre-worn in look.

I've just bought a pair of Levi Black Sharps in raw indigo on ebay.. can't wait to get them! I'm loving trying the different brands to see their own take on using raw denim in their jeans.

Yay for this thread! I LOVE raw denim. My next pair is either going to be Nudie, Denimbirds, or APC. The APC I have now is too tight. I sized down three sizes because I heard before that APC typically stretches out a lot. Well, I definitely went too far with that. I need a 26 now.

Wait, wait, wait you're not supposed to wash them? Wtf no one told me. I bought a pair of Nudies and I've washed them like 8473247892 times. Well **** I'm a dumbass. There goes 280 down the drain.

Awww hang on, not all Nudies are raw.. they make pre-treated and washed jeans too, and if yours cost you $280 then they're likely to be that sort, as the handiwork that goes into them costs that much more. Over here the raw jeans are only $160 because all that's gone into them is the denim and the manufacturing. All raw dry Nudies come with the big pamphlet book in the back right pocket, telling you all about the dry denim and how to look after it. In fact, all dry denim I've bought from other brands too have something like this, so that you don't turn all your whites blue in the wash!

Kris, head over to the Nudies website, there's tons of info there. Also see the mynudies forum. Massive cult following! I love my raw denim, they're just about all I wear now and I'm a big denimaholic with a 50+ jeans collection.

Sofia, thanks, I can't wait to get them! With your dark jeans, you can try wearing them in faster by using a very fine grade sandpaper across the areas you wish to fade. The unwashed raw denim has the dye kind of sitting on top of the fabric, rather than washed into it, which is why the whiskers and faded areas appear as you wear them and the dye is rubbed off. You just need to hurry this up if you want your pair to be lighter after you wash them, so you can do such things as rubbing dry cloth (I sometimes use a teatowel) over those areas you want to fade faster. And wear them. Lots!

Heads up, for anyone interested the Tsubi Lean Beans in Dry Raw are on sale at mycatwalk. I have a pair of these and love them. The denim is thicker than Nudies, but stretchier too, and still softens up after awhile. Mine are already showing some nice patina and whiskering, they seem to develop this faster than the Nudies which is contrary to what I expected really.

diesel has been making raw/unwashed jeans for a bit. their cut/s are very flattering. gstar also makes a pretty good slim raw. april 77 also makes a raw wash called overdrive that fit very narrow and nicely (but very tight) in my experience.
there are also plenty of interesting japanese brands like pure blue japan that had a tapered women's cut. skull by an alchemist has a straight leg and bootcut/flare. samurai have the interesting "geisha" cut...and so on... :]

so much raw to explore...!

Earlier this week I did some alterations on a pair of Denimbirds Bootcut in Dry Black.. I've been searching for Nudie Slim Kims in Dry Black forever, but haven't found any, so cut the boot out of my bootcut! I haven't worn any bootcut jeans for 2 years now, and couldn't stand how all that extra material flapped around my ankles, so took them in on the lower half of the leg. It's only a subtle change but has made a hell of a difference.. they're still slightly bootcut as I took the extra material out of the back half of the jeans, and could only take them in to the shape of the front half, but it's such a slight increase in width of only 1" from the knee to the hem so can barely be seen whilst worn.

Am dying to find some G-Star or Diesel raw.. I've seen some gorgeous R&R raw Costello jeans on ebay and they look lovely too, but haven't gotten my paws on a pair yet.

My other half has just bought me some Edun raw straightleg jeans, in a great deal on ebay! More raw, very excited as I've heard great things of Edun but have never tried them before.
