while i am 20's i kinda feel that the time for me to wear young contemporary clothes is running out. so the "will i wear it when i'm 40?" wont really apply to me.

did anyone read that nora ephron book "i feel bad about my neck"? the book is about the pitfalls of growing older. basically the philosophy of the book is that we should celebrate our bodies while we are still young. in the book she says that if she was 26, she would wear a bikini every day.

plus, i am not at the stage where the majority of my garments are not "investment items". i tend to wear maybe ten things to death at work and then get rid of them.

Oooo this is a great thread I've practically doubled my wardrobe in the past year because I keep buying buying and buying.

And then one day (yesterday, actually) I take a break, sit down, sift through everything and realise that a lot of it, especially the ones bought on impulse- I've only worn it once or twice.

Sure, they've all been well-maintained and in excellent condition; but it just feels like I was buying a lot of things because I was worried I wouldn't be able to find them again, particularly in fast fashion where the clothes are never the same everytime I go into the store. But a good wardrobe should be about pieces that fit you, showcase who you are, and most importantly, that you feel comfortable in. And I wasn't working towards that.

So I'm going to slow down, start investing in better-quality, classic pieces.

In the meantime the Salvation Army is going to receive a large anonymous donation of clothes...

Hahaha! I do not take it literally. I mean think "will I wear this when I am older?"

But not grandmaish clothes! My main inspiration is Carine Roitfeld...she is 50 and she wears both classic and crazy clothes and looks great. So actually instead of will I wear this when I am 40 think more what would Carine do

Can't go wrong with Carine, at any age really

I've started writing a list of every item I'm lusting for. Going through it, I realize that over 70% of the items I've wanted, I don't want anymore. It was a passing fad, and by waiting it out, I save myself money and unnecessary clothing. I think the key thing for me is to wait a week or two (or more, if there are lingering doubts) before buying anything. And to stay off certain tfs threads, which make me want to buybuybuy. Darn tfs, so inspiring sometimes.

Joiedemode, I have to agree about being inspired by Carine. I want a "What Would Carine Do" tee shirt.

For me, I feel like I am buying, or at least spending, but I look in the closet and there's literally nothing there! I think I am afraid to buy beautiful things, so I just buy sensibly and so I have half a dozen black tops and that's about it I really want to allocate a given amound and then go out and just SPEND it all at once and try to come up with things I love and that work together and the basics I've already got. It's hard Uh oh, I am still a victim of the hysteria!

^I have the same problem but I usually buy a lot of beautiful special (party)clothes. I have those beautiful silk (now summer) dresses...but I can't wear those all the time Also, heels..I love them but mostly I just wear my ballerina flats so they end up stuck in my closet and I just can't resist buying them

I feel that.
I'm absolutely mad about clothes. Even from as early as I can remember, I've just always really loved beautiful clothing. So, it can get a little ridiculous sometimes. && unfortunately, even if I don't plan on wearing the clothes ever, I'll still buy it because I'm just so mad over a certain dress, or ring..or whatever. In my apartment, clothes pill out from the closet, into my room, and into the livivng room on racks && hangers..coats thrown on couches, it's awful. That being said, I have the same problem. Everything is everywhere, && even all put up, I'll look at it all and get so upset about having nothing to wear, haha. Unfortunately, I'm not really smart about buying "sensible" clothing either. I don't buy crisp, button up shirts and stock up, I'm more into buying mink fur waistcoats, and sequined Chanel mini shorts, lol. I recognized "enough is enough" when I bought the apartment next to mine && put them together, && when I connected the two, I had to make the second closet even bigger to accomodate everything.

Anyways. Sorry to prattle! [/end rant.]

Gosh, I should think about this thread everytime I'm about to buy something I really don't need. Today I went a "little" shopping and came home with some items that just aren't me. I'll try to get a refund, but since it's second hand I doubt it. Oh, the shame. What do you guys do to cope with the guilt?

After a bit of thinking, and with this thread in mind, I have decided only to buy clothes I find perfect.
It has to fit perfectly and suit my style.
I have made myself a "look-book" where I put in pictures of outfits, clothes and accessories I love. After some time, I hope it will give me a better sence of what styles I tend to go for.

I am very proud of myself today. I was out shopping, and I only bought a bracelet, which was on sale.
I tend to go crazy at sales, and buy things I don't love, just because the price is good.
I tried on some dresses. They were pretty nice, but not perfect, so i didn't buy them

I have also cleaned out my clothes, shoes and bags, and gave away everything I didn't wear or just didn't love that much. And I had a lot, I never wore. It actually felt very god to get writ of it, and there is a bit more space in my closet now.

I hope I will be able to keep it up.
