avant-garde
'
A group active in the invention and application of new techniques in a given field, especially in the arts.' /
'Of, relating to, or being part of an innovative group, especially one in the arts'

basically smthn innovative, a bit different & maybe ahead of it's time

i'm sure others can give better descriptions !

I have a few...

Voile - Soft, gauzy cotton with a silky, wonderful feel.
But how can you tell the difference between regular cotton and cotton voile... just by touching I guess? Does it have more sheen?

What is the difference between SATIN and SATEEN?

Pintucks - what does this look like?

Topstitching - ?

BTW Softgrey all your posts are so informative, thank you!

May be wrong, but I think satin is typically made of silk or rayon (a smooth fabric) and has a glossy finish. I believe sateen is typically cotton w/ a satinlike finish...

The blouse at the following link has pintucks. It's the gathers down the front. Similar to pleats but I think they're usually tacked down...

Topstitching - ?
A row of stitching close to the seam or edge of (a garment) on the outer side of the fabric. In other words, stitching visible on the outside. Generally done in a contrasting color. The jacket in the below photo has topstitching

Not sure about the Voile question...

Thanks Curious

The reason I asked about topstitching is because I once saw a dress that had flowers stitched on to it, but instead of calling it embroidery, it was noted as topstitching... so my next question is...

What's the difference between topstitching and embroidery?

embroidery is usually an object or pattern that is stitched on whereas topstiching follows the line of stitching.

Top stitching certainly doesn't have to be in a contrasting colour... It's very, very common but mostly almost invisible. It's just a technique.

The way I see it the difference is that top stitching follows the seams, it's a reinforcement or enhancement of the cut/tailoring. Embroidery is purely ornamental and goes anywhere on the fabric. Embroidery is made up of different kinds of stitches as well, it's not made by a simple sewing machine.
