Hemming Women's Pants...length?
I am very particular about the length of my pants...

so i have an issue about what length to hem my pants...
what if i want to wear a higher heel one day and the next day a flat?...

i usually solve this issue by simply wearing cropped pants all the time...
but...
i have several pairs of beautiful new pants waiting to be hemmed...
(yes-i was actually going to crop these as well..LOL)...
but i have decided i would like some long pants...

any tips on determining what the correct length should be?...
that would work with more than one shoe...

i'm thinking i should wear a 2-3 inch heel when measuring the lenth...
since most of my heels are not higher than that...
and if i wear a flat...i sort of like the 'puddling' effect...

thoughts?...
thanks!

I normally wear my pants with the heels I'll wear with (I wear mostly 3" heels) and then put pins on to make a mark. The "normal" length is 0.5" to 1" from the floor - tailors will tell you that. I don't mind floor length pants as they will look "shorter" once you walk/move.
I don't mind the pudding effect either...the only drawback is that the hem of the pants tend to be worn out quickly.
Let me know if you have more questions on details...I normally hem my pants by myself and I've got lots of lessons

Don't hem those Helmut Lang pants too high, I'm still borrowing them from you!!!

I like women's pants that show a part of a shoe, boot. I don't like when they cover almost everything but the heel, so more or less cropped (unlike men's pants, which I think should always drape/bunch at least once)....

caffeine honey...
thanks for trying to help...
but i think you missed the point of my dilemma...

my point is that i DO NOT want to have to determine the shoe i will wear...
i want to be ble to wear them with whatever shoe i feel like putting on that day...

so what do i do in that case...??

i do NOT want to be restricted as to which shoe i can wear...
i need options...

ps- i don't follow any 'rules' about length...
i use my eye...
the 'rules' are pretty useless...
the length should vary according to the width of the pant leg...
and the style of the shoe...
you have to eyeball it...

and yeah...i hem all my own pants as well....
as well as those of others...since it is part of my job......

**don't you just hate it when people don't hem their jeans and wear a wide leg pant rolled up?!?......
that is one of my huge pet peeves...
it really bugs me....

they should fall a smidgen below the back of the heel where the upper meets the top of the heel, so that no matter what heel-height you wear, the pants are at their longest without touching the ground...

No soft I didn't find a length that fits all kinds of shoes...the only solution to me is to buy pants in different length. My case is a lot easier as I normally wear 3" heels.

Had to ask a hard one, huh?

I've never been able to come up with a solution for this. Best I've come up with is to hem them for a heel (2-3 inches like you said) and then faux-hem them with double sided tape when you want to wear a flat. This, of course, is a total pain in the *** since one rarely has 10 extra minutes in the morning to "hem" a pair of pants The other solution I've used is same as Caffeine's... buy two pairs One for heels and one for flats. I've only done this with jeans.

Back.in.black's suggestion is good except, imo, it only works with a skinny or straight leg pant. I think wide-legs look really weird with a heel if they don't cover the shoe...

yeah...
i know it's a hard one....
it has bugged me my whole life...
it's fine to have different jns or different blk pants...
but i recently got a pair of purple pants and i do NOT want TWO prs of purple pants......

i agree with what you said about the length curious...
with a wider leg there is nothing i hate more than a hem flapping in the breeze...
better too long than too short ALWAYS imo...

i did a page on it for a magazine once...and that was the advice i gave...
the 2-3 inch heel ...
but i just wondered if anyone else had ever come up with an alternate solution since we have so many clever girls here...

...

yeah, I agree about wide legs - they should be looong. besides, you have to be pretty tall to pull off wide legs with flats...

i think you should wear your 2inch heels and hem them to fit that length..
then they shouldnt be too long when you wear flats with them and they shouldnt be too short when you wear 3inch heels with them.

i actually hem most of my pants to 31 inseam because then i can wear them with flats/sneakers and heels. (im about 161cm)

also when im wearing heels i try not to wear belts..
or wear them very loose if i have to wear them...
that way my pants sit low on my hips by like.. 0.5 inch..
making your pants 0.5 inch longer when you wear higher heels..
it really does make a lot of difference.....

so wearing belts to adjust your hem length is very important imo...

that was just the solution i was thinking of!

someone should invent pants where the hem moves easily up and down for heel lengths since there doesnt seem to be any easy solution!
