But in the same vein, if it's not somewhat decent quality it makes things look cheap reeeal fast. But yeah, for the most part, it's like leather dressed up!

sure- you do still have to pick a good style ...
and if the stitching looks cheap it can give it away...
:p
but when i was younger...
i had lots of blk patent belts and bags cause it was a really easy way to dress something up and add that extra element of chic-ness that i so craved...

of course...
as you can see...i now spend stupid amounts of money on my patent pieces...

but - you know what...
i still have all those patent pieces from the 80's...
and they are still cool!!!...

Aha. I was recently corrected by someone who told me to do the opposite, but I will go with what you've said. Sorry about that.

I've had another Longchamp over-the-shoulder black patent bag for about four or five years now and have gotten so much use out of it, I wouldn't hesitate to buy another just like it. It's so perfect for going out at night, and even though it's gotten a little banged up, I still love it as much as I did when I picked it out. So the style has been a great investment for me, personally. (This is mostly in response to softgrey's comment about still having stuff from the 80s. Makes sense to me!)

Forgot to mention, my flats are red crinkle patent.

I just bought some black patent penny loafers (inspired in part by those of Alexa Chung) and I'm sort of in love with them. I don't know at what point I ought to start considering this a vice.

I love patent leather. It looks new much longer than normal leather and it is much easier to maintain.

The glossy surface looks great with velvet or knit or any other mat material.
