i'm 5'1 (and a half. ha! ) and usually when i wear cropped things i look taller. small prints, too. also, as mentioned, empire dresses, solid colours.

and also big bulky belts are a no no for me.

I'm not all that short, I'm on the tall side of 5'4", but people always think I'm around 5'7", and get really surprised when I tell them my actual height. Keeping your weight low keeps the height to width ratio nice, and really makes you look a lot taller, and for those of us who aren't giants a few lbs can easily make us look squat. Standing up straight is also key, as not only will you be taller, but as so many people slouch comparativly you wont be so tiny.
Clothing wise: The trick is to wear...
-fitted clothing, keep the look lean
-make sure jeans are long enough to still touch the floor when sitting but don't swamp you when standing
-keep skirts either hitting just below the knee, abover the knee, or mini. Mid calf is a never, and floor length looks all wrong
-dresses should be fitted on the top, empire is a safe bet, and should have a straight bottom
-dont wear those extra long tops. On us shorter people tees become tunics. Keep shirts hitting very near the top of your pants

and the best trick? surround yourself with short men :-)

Hum ... a long jacket sometimes helps ... as well as a thin scarf ... I think pants are like the best to look tall

I go to church and there are a lot of shorter people-I'm extremely short-5'6"-and with flip-flops I'm still taller than a lot of people-but maybe since my friends are all shorter.

High heels and funky stockings with a short skirt make me look taller anyday.

um, 5ft 6 is so far from extremely short it isn't even funny. extremely short is the guy who played mini me in austin powers, short is kylie minogue and petite is up to about 5ft 3 or 4. you're above average heading onto tall! crazy people!

i'm 5ft 2. i look so much taller in dresses, with tights especially. shorts look good. flowy long things on top and more fitted things on bottom. but that's just for me really as i have long legs for my body so longer tops make me seem more proportioned.

-Pinstripes (on blazers and pants) elongate your body.
-Scarves, deep v-necks, and long necklaces also draw the eye down, which elongates your body.
-Wearing one solid, dark color not only slims you but gives the illusion of height as well.
-Short hair elongates your neck and doesn't drag you down like a lot of longer styles do.
-Toss the cropped or shorter-fitted shirts/jackets/boleros and stick to long, lean fits. Target is a great place to stock up on classy, basic shirts, and they all (from my experience) fit lean and long.
-The fit of clothes go a long way. Make sure your clothes are not too tight OR too loose. Layers are great, but the MKA look circa 04 is going to make a petite frame look dumpy.
-Drawing the eye both up and down can make you seem taller, so either play up your top-half with a brighter color, (such as auburn hair or a brightly colored scarf) or play up your bottom-half (try a pair of vibrant heels)
-Best kept secret-LONG jeans with TALL heels. All the stars do it. If jeans are to long, it's a good thing! They're the perfect length to pair with a pair of 3 inch + heels. I'm 5'6 and people often assume I'm 5'9 or 10, because I buy jeans in a longer inseam and wear heels. No one can tell until you take them off!
-Pilates and yoga are both known to lengthen your body, so practicing these regulary really does have a slight but charitable effect on your height, not to mention your body will look 5x more amazing after just a month.
-Thinner people always seem taller, so losing a few extra lbs does do your height justice.
-If all else fails, they actually make shoe inserts that make you "gain" between 1-3 inches. They're available online. Just google "height shoe inserts" and you should find what I'm speaking of.

Wearing same color thighs with same color shoes creates an effect like you are taller, all black for example ..

I'm pretty short too, around 5.5 but I HATE wearing heels.
I wouldn't wear floor length skirts if you're slim you'll probably just drown in them (at least I do ) but rather go with miniskirts or knee-length. Nothing below the knee. I also only wear jackets that don't go beneath 3/4 of my butt and absolutely no coats.

I didn't even remember creating this thread, but I'm thrilled I found it again! It's ended up being very helpful! Since I posted this, I've found some other advice, too:

Long lines, like a long *fitted* black coat and black heels, can be incredibly lengthening as long as the cut and fit isn't overwealming.

Keep cut and patterns, for the most part, simple.

Loose weight. Between that and the heels, I've had a good number of people assume I'm at least 5'7".

In regards to the confidence, this must sound like a lunatic, but it's been helpful to me: Picture yourself in your mind as being model tall. You automatically begin to move in a different way, your body is carried with the confidence we all associate with glamazons. You don't have to decide you'll be "cute" because of your height; you can choose you'll still be sexy. It's all just playing pretend - very fun and kinda useful.
