Hmmm... I understand the appeal of this look, but unless it is a little looser and more like trousers, like in the Marni and Givenchy examples, I don't understand how this look is particularly attractive.

The Daily Mail reports:

Tights for men! But would you let your boyfriend wear these?

23rd September 2009

They have long been a staple in every woman’s winter wardrobe but now it seems leggings could become the must-have item for men too.

Leading department store Selfridges is launching its first ever collection of hosiery for men this autumn, admitting that inquiries have soared in the past year. Dubbed ‘Mantihose’ and made by lingerie brand Unconditional the range will go on sale later this week with a pair of tights retailing for £70.

The thick 120 denier tights are available in black, beige and charcoal and only in one size, which designers say fits all. Made from a mix of cotton of lycra and cotton, which it is claimed will offer increased comfort, warmth and support as colder weather arrives.

For decades women have raided their husbands’ and boyfriends’ wardrobes and in recent years men have increasingly experimented with feminine fashion.

Celebrities such as David Beckham, who famously sported a sarong, and Russell Brand, who has championed skin tight trousers, styled bouffant hair and eyeliner for men, have led the charge. Stores have already sold male handbags dubbed ‘manbags’, leggings for men known as ‘meggings’ and eyeliner for men described as ‘guyliner’, but now it seems metrosexual attitudes are extending to hosiery.

A spokesman for the store said it has seen inquiries from men about tights increase dramatically in the past five years. Often men want the tights to help them create a leaner silhouette under slimline suiting, others have said they are useful simply for warmth.

David Walker-Smith, Selfridges' Director of Menswear and Beauty, added: ‘This winter the city’s most stylish men will have a secret weapon hidden in their trousers. The “mantihose” is extremely versatile and we expect men to be wearing them not only as a way to as a way to give legs an extra boost of warmth on the chilliest nights, but as a true style statement.’

London based hosiery designer Harisnya has set up a dedicated website on the topic, filled with style tips and discussion topics. He insists that tights should be seen as unisex rather than solely for women. ‘Male pantyhose can be worn for health, sports and fashion. So on the website we aim to show that pantyhose could be a regular clothing item for men.'

Tights have historically had a place in the male wardrobe but fell out of favour 200 years ago. Today men who work outside in the freezing temperatures, cavers, long distance cyclists, and some showbusiness stars are most likely to don a pair.

The Aviation Health Institute recommends that all plane travellers wear special 'high pressure' travel tights to combat jet lag. It says oxygen starvation is a key factor in jet lag because there is less oxygen in the air in aircraft cabins. Travel tights can help increase the flow of oxygenated blood back to the heart by up to 30 per cent, by putting pressure on specific muscles.

I've heard about it some months ago.

What I ment was that German press, which semms to be very conservative about menswear, wrote "positive" about this trend.

i guess it's the same when tennis players wear that stretchy cuff on their wrists. i've recently began to notice my old parents wearing them too. for the elbow area though.

I've seen ones they wear for athletic purposes but never just to "look good". I think it's just waaaay too feminine to wear them. I mean skinny jeans is one thing but leggings...no way.
They just defeat any wisp of masculinity in any man.

A lot of the "meggings" go just below the knee and, when worn with a pair of shorts, actually look good. Otherwise, no way! There are certain parts of a man that don't look right with tights. I think you know what I'm talking about...

When meggings are ok:
