It's probably a very silly question, but can someone explain to me what the difference is between thongs and g-strings??

Ever since the Thong Song I've been wondering if a g-string and a thong are the same thing, here in Holland we only have the 'string' and that's the word you use for everything that leaves your bum free :P

I wear either these or hipster boxers. I love those frilly, girly, sexy briefs with bows and lace in all colors but find them very hard to wear without vpl or very strange shapes

They are generally about the same with one difference - the shape of the back piece. Think of the letter "T" when you view a g-string, and think of the letter "Y" when you view a thong.

A thong has a little more material to it.

A G-string is just a piece of string for the backside. Covers nothing at all.
