Jess Cartner-Morley's review in The Guardian (UK) on 30.1.2009 neatly summarised Vauthier's aims with his debut show.

Quote:
AT Paris Haute Couture, the pricing policy is simple but brutal: if you need to ask how much a dress is, then you definitely cannot afford it.

A new couturier, showing his first collection in Paris this week, is daring to question this. Alexandre Vauthier has challenged the status quo by arguing that modern haute couture is overpriced.

"Alexandre Vauthier holds the view that prices of couture clothes today are unrealistic and do not reflect the historical prices that clients paid in the past, when whole wardrobes were ordered for the season," his publicist announced before the show.

"Nor does he believe that luxury ready-to-wear offers an honest level of quality of fabrics and manufacturing for the prices being charged today, which are more akin to the price of couture in the past."

If Vauthier intends to make good on this apparent promise to sell clothes at the standard of haute couture but the prices of luxury ready-to-wear, he may achieve the seemingly unlikely feat of successfully launching a new haute couture brand just as the world sinks into a recession.

In the snobbish world of couture Vauthier has a fine pedigree: he was first assistant at Jean Paul Gaultier's haute couture line, and previously served as right-hand man to Thierry Mugler. In a coup for a little-known name, Vauthier has charmed the pop singer Roisin Murphy into opening his debut show.

Across town, Gaultier proved that the new kids do not have the monopoly on fresh ideas by choosing a 51-year-old model as the star of his show. Ines de la Fressange is a style icon in Paris, and was greeted with rapturous applause.

Not even the appearance of singers Kanye West and Kylie Minogue in the audience could steal her thunder.
Vauthier is quite passionate about producing not just affordable clothing but clothing made with materials of acceptable quality, which is unusual in an industry that fobs customers off with high-priced garments made of material one would reject if considering a purchase in a low rent street market.

He also aims to avoid involving child labour and other dodgy manufacturing practices as described in the novel and depicted in the film Gormorra, with garbage imported from Chinese forced labour camps and "finished" in places like Naples to allow them to be described as made in the EU. Of course, fashion journalists wouldn't discuss that side of things in any article in case they found themselves disinvited from various shows! LOL!

Hats off to Vauthier. OK, so the shoulders are a bit OTT but so what? I'm sure he'd make you a nice dress without the Joan Collins silhouette if you asked him.
