In a fashion moment marked by the deconstruction of 'lady' and british heritage (For SS11 Proenza Schouler, Christopher Kane - Princess Margaret on acid - and Chanel - boucle with a holed, riptorn patina) and which might be characterised as a revisitation of a time when Westwood and McQueen both sung from this particular songsheet, it's interesting to look see if any of the tired old english heritage brands are joining the throng.

At Aquascutum, now apparently doing better under the leadership of Jaeger's Harold Tillman, the answer for AW11/12 was yes. With Joanna Sykes debuting this was a promising collection which gave an old Saville Row stalwart much more contemporary relevance.

We could have done without quite so much of the silvergrey and orange which feels too much like yesterday's graphic design palette but there are some interesting deconstructive and trompe l'oeil ideas here.

The diamond/argyle motif which we've seen much of in NYC, was rendered not in knitwear but in chiffon applique left dangling, then scrunched. It was a pity this idea was seen in only two looks and not developed further.

The peacoats and trenches invaded at the sternum by cropped sleeveless puffas was an interesting juxtaposition of traditional and contemporary. To riff unexpectedly on the puffa called to mind the Wang/Altuzarra axis this season and it was more grist to the mill that it couldn't clearly be read if they were one piece or two.

The arm gauntlet ibook holder was fun.

The several takes on the kilt silhouette were also of interest including where Joanna played with envelope hip pockets evoking kilting but not actually being any form of skirting.

A bit of 50's here and there, a bit of 70's, a bit of 90's slouch: she pressed all the right buttons and with Burberry having disappeared into an albeit commercially successful but increasingly more moribund mid market cul-de-sac, the time ought to be right to take an english heritage brand and deconstruct it's tropes with a little iconoclasm so to complete the rescue mission. Burberry is yesterday's news, tomorrow's might just be Aquascutum.

This's interesting. I've rarely seen this brand mentioned. A year or so ago, I got an Aquascutum black, structured cotton coat jacket that's very Brit trenchcoat with a little Armani and, sort of, Yamamoto flavor.
