Chanel Resort 2006
from today's wwd

Quote:
It's been years since Karl Lagerfeld has been on a bus; his clairvoyant told him it could bring disaster. But the designer made a very stylish exception on Tuesday as he loaded models onto a convoy of vintage green buses here to present a chic cruise collection for the house of Chanel.

"You know, this isn't just any bus," he reasoned, as he explained the cool knits, diaphanous lace dresses, jackets with military epaulettes and a breezy "Coco" print on everything from baggy blousons to flirty skirts. "It's very lighthearted and easy," he said. "A mix of sophistication and sport, with a game of proportions."

Tweed, of course, abounded, whether in the form of suits or separates. It snaked around the waistband of slinky trousers and was placed like patches over faux rips. Meanwhile, sequins were embroidered on skirts, dresses and vests, a testament to the house's couture-level handiwork.

Setting off from the Place de la Concorde, the fashion fleet ambled across the Seine to St. Germain, making occasional stops so models could switch buses. Lagerfeld rotated, too, offering commentary. "I used to love riding the bus in Paris as a schoolboy," he said. "I loved watching the scenery of the city."

Clearly Paris — at least as a rarified icon of style — is on Lagerfeld's mind, judging from the berets, dresses decorated with cutouts of Parisian monuments and charms such as shrunken versions of the Eiffel Tower.

Then the tone shifted to red-carpet fare. The buses deposited editors at the Café de Flore, where they sat down to canapés and champagne and a beautiful brigade of evening gowns.

"Everyone's asking for evening," said Lagerfeld of his beguiling confections in lace or silk chiffon.

When it was over, the designer sat down to chat with the likes of actresses Anna Mouglalis and Virginie Ledoyen. "They used to do a lot of ready-to-wear shows in cafes and restaurants," he offered. "One of my first Chloe shows was at [Brasserie] Lipp. It's very Paris, no?"

Thanks kimair...

From what I can see it's pretty much the same old same old.

If I were invited to that show Id be sooo annoyed, being in close quarters with people on a bus stopping and starting every once in a while...Someone would get cut.

It's a cute idea though it seems very tedious. Oh Cafe de Flore! Ive been there and it is absolutely gorgeous. The clothes do seem sort of repititious though with Chanel nothing ever gets tired. Karl really hasn't hit a lot of things he could do with Chanel, at least I think he hasn't, some are very obvious and others aren't...

This collection is still very much in the flavour of Chanel..in the sense that tweed, pearls, chiffon... the lady still dominates.

Some cute looks from the collection(pics from chanel.com):

So far it seems better than F/W 05, less stiff (although they're not) tweeds and more ethereal. The dresses are much better here, rather than his conceptual dresses that are pretty but not at the same time.

Does this collection seem a tad deconstructed? The sort of off to one side, baring skin in a wierd way look. That black houndstooth jacket is showing her thigh and that teal dress in post #5 has a slant to the embroidery. Plus the lace has sort of a structural bare bones look. Not to mention those stripped back platforms and the boots with cutouts, they imply the interior of that building made of glass in Paris...He said it was inspired by Parisien monuments.

I was thinking the same thing. I was looking on Chanel.com and they're wedges and flats, though the wedges are frumpy. I think they look like Balenciaga...I forgot how much I love these...

How do I post pics from Chanel.com? There is this gorgeous pink swimsuit...

When I first saw those boots they reminded me of these Lagerfeld Gallery ones from Spring 2001.

And now they sort of look like an amalgamation of these and the Balenciaga ones. With a toe cap. To me, at least.

For me, something about this collection works somehow. The eveningwear is great (minus the paris monument printed ones... ) but the daywear is sort of off, but it seem maybe its just the fit or something....i love the accessories, all the bracelets and necklaces are very good...personally, i am not crazy about their version of the gladiator sandal but i love the 3 strap spectator pump

I think she's actually wearing a one-piece, and holding a bag in the same fabric...not so daring after all...
