Uemarasan, isn't that red in some way magmatic or demiurgic ?
and the following print seems to be something like CdG mandala.
Quote:
In common use, mandala has become a generic term for any plan, chart or geometric pattern that represents the cosmos metaphysically or symbolically, a microcosm of the universe from an enlightened perspective, i.e. that of the principle deity.
so then the print could represent the CdG Universe from the perspective of Rei Kawakubo (the principle deity/designer)...
the world from her point of view...

is this what you mean runner?

i'm digging the interpretations of her use of the red...
both personally and professionally...

a demiurge is like a lesser god.
a god who belongs to the material world rather than
the God who dwells in space and has absolute, unlimited and eternal power.

like god, a demiurge creates things, but her creations are limited by material constraints...
she is sort of a half-god, half-human in this respect.

the word is a combination of "demos," which means "public" in ancient greek, and "ergos," which means worker.

so maybe with this word runner is referring to Rei's limits as a creator, which he was just mentioning above?
there is a tension between her abstract nature as a thinker and the very material and limited medium that she chooses to work in....
and she exploits that tension, perhaps even revels in it.

as for magmatic...i am pretty sure it's a geological term,
but i'm a bit lost--and intrigued-- as to how to interpret it here.
i may have to resort to pedantic sources before I can get back to you. :p

with 'in some way magmatic', I just wanted to say it looks a bit like magma. maybe lava is the right english word for it?

anyway, in terms of what laika mentioned, black and red, both directions.

awesome images, runner.

i think magma is exactly the right word...magma is a mix of solid and liquid rock,
which is exactly what that looks like! Whereas lava is the smooth, molten stuff...

edit: the headpieces also seem to be part of this fire/volcanic imagery..

couldnt put my finger on it before but the red and black organic nature of the fabric definitely reminds me of molten lava.
the last prints have a tinge of paul klee in them.

yes softgrey, that kind of thing, in her use of the print in this particular context.

in her country, the word mandala is seen and heard to be used in a broader sense.
for example, the photographer shomei tomatsu used to like using the word for description of his work.
this painting by michiyo kamei is sort of modern mandala, microcosm.

'ironic' is about both sides. fashion and art, feminine and masculine, shape and amorphous...and, as I mentioned her in the ccp thread, it's also a kind of a serious play.

as for the deliberation and logic, she is not able to make clothes herself, without official sartorial training, what she studied at school being aesthetics and science of arts. while she has an image, she cannot put it into a form. so, the formation through all the communications with patternmakers over and over and over could be the process of somewhat cooling down the original heat of the image. also if the image - the madness is of playful nature, the play element in it could function as a formative one (along the lines of huizinga/homo ludens, play creates order). in this regard it may be possible to call something logical about it rhythm.

g-now.com
i like this idea of play...even if it is a somewhat serious form of play and not a carefree, childlike form of it...
and i agree...the process does take on a sort of rythm when it is working...
maybe that is how you know that it is working...
when you feel the rythm taking over and you are just feeling your way through by instinct, rather than intellect...
this sounds right and accurate to me...

Yeah, apparently, the prints of the finale are of Dan Michiels' already existing works. Very interesting: http://www.creativityexplored.org/artists/dan-michiels

Finally, detailed close-ups.

Thanks, guys, as always for the fascinating discussion. Runner and laika, yes, red with its connotations of birth in Japan. And given the images of magma, I can see how it all ties up!
