all the japanese avant-garde designers (and their proteges) are featuring icons of an era in their work: yohji - dinos, junya - goth/ punk, comme - crown/ union jack... nothing is timeless, fallen beasts and empires and ideologies. they are acknowlegding that it's time fashion enter a new era... one that isn't perhaps so reliant on conjuring up crusted over nostalgia to sell to the masses.

i think what birdofparadise said in the other thread about self-preservation made a lot of sense... i think the fashion industry is looking at itself and realizing it's archaic in a modern world. you can't apply the same sort of punk ideologies to today as when they were first dreamed up in south london decades ago... britian is no longer the empire any longer -- america is. maybe america...maybe business, and life as we know it isn't how things are run anymore? i think using these 'symbols' is trying to address how people box, stereotype, pigeonhold ideas in without actually seeing what's there... basically the NATURE of FASHION. it's all symbols and surface. but, it's a universal thing, it's like people all over the world needing to create a mythology like with the Undercover collection.

i think they are trying to say this is what fashion is seen as, a bunch of blatant sterotypes, but it actually doesn't need to be. it can move forward and address real problems and reflect real people.

Looking forward to seeing more...so far I think this is the best collection yet from the newly "iconic" Rei.
I hadn't even noticed the pleats in the jacket, I love that they're twisted. As for the collection as a whole, it's too early for me to tell.

long live the queen!

it seems this season the japanese guarde shows are more state-of-affairs commentary rather than plain old fashion...

by this i don't mean that designers should stop doing what they do best -- dreaming and being creative, but maybe acknowledge that the garments have a second, third life after the designer puts it out into the public, and the garments, in a sense, mutate and break down into fitting the wearer's lifestyle, and become something wholey new. in the end, the wearer is hardly the pawn, because the roles reverse.

I love this! It's so much fun

It's all so hilarious, but I bet that there are some wonderful clothes underneath this costume party. And the girls look gorgeous... thanks for posting EllaH!
