IMHO I'm not a fan of designers that are famous. I often find that when they dabble in things such as music, movies, modeling and fashion they aren't very good (i.e. Gwen Stefani & Kimora Lee) as their designs leave something to be desired or are extremly over the top.It seems to always be one of the other. Most of these celebs don't even do most of the designing themselves (a la J.Lo)and leave most of it to a design team and then tag their name on it.
i dont know about designers being celebrities, but what really pisses me off is when celebrities become designers.
almost all celebrity-turned-designers have no talent whatsoever, and shouldn't even be allowed to sell their clothes (that are sold for way too much than what theyre actually worth).
I don't mind designers beeing celebirties but...why not, if they are good at what they do they should also be famous for it... what I usually don't like is celebrities becoming designers like gwen stefani...
celebrity designers and 'diva' designers are very 'done' and boring, this attitude belongs to an older state of mind..
i'm all for uber succesful anti-star designers like Alber Elbaz, Martin Grant and Tisci ..more modern, more human, more focused on their work
I personally love having both kinds of designers in the fashion world! Juxtapose Alber Elbaz and John Galliano.. I think they both add something to the overall scene.
in my book, one either focuses on PR or on design..
hence i prefer the design focused designers, glam & partying takes valueable time and energy from concentrating at one's real work (which is original/creative garment construction)
I think people should be able to do whatever they want. I mean, we all like the starving, mysterious artist, rarely seen in the public eye, but few people enjoy that kind of life. I'm not one to dictate.
It's reassuring to have a return to craftmanship with the forementioned young brigade of extremely talented designers who (like Margiela the godfather of anti-ness) also shun the media limelight.
I also feel celebrity to have reached its apex in antics (you know who you are). It's why other celebs have had an arena to dabble in fashion, but true skill is what separates the diamonds from the dirt.
Let the work speak for itself.
