At one point they seemed to be innovators in fashion, they seemed like a promising duo that would take on fashion with new techniques and fabrics but then they took a step 300 years back, they could still establish those deep Italian roots with slick, chic designs that make them leaders in fashion and markets world wide will look up to as opposed to stale and "traditional" **** they have been putting out.

so... adding volume and huge flower appliques equals couture?

They're getting more over-the-top each season, aren't they?

^I'm a sucker for this kind of Dolce & Gabbana. Their pre-2010 collections had over-the-top ball gowns that were absolutely gorgeous like this one. I'll take a a slightly tacky D&G over a Sicilian one any day of the week. Even though this is a little bit Sicilian, they're at least brought back some dramatic silhouettes for couture. One can only hope they'll bring this back into rtw.

If it takes hours & hours to make, then I don't see why it wouldn't be considered couture.

^it is my opinion that it takes more than that for an outfit to be couture.

^May I ask what you would define as couture?

^precise cutting, execution and high quality and/or rare fabric. These past gowns look like they use tons of tulle and brocade lace (is that the correct term in english for the fabric of the green outfit?) and I donīt particularly see any distinct execution that differentiates them from a prom dress, other than lots of flowers. Iīm sure they required lots of man-hour but like I said, to me it isnīt enough.

^Well these gowns certainly aren't the most innovative things we've seen, but I think people muddle the terms haute couture and avante grade together too often. Haute couture is really just a custom made, hand-stitched garment made for exclusive clientele. In that case, Dolce & Gabbana fit this criteria, along with similarly "wearable" couturiers like Elie Saab & Giambattista Valli.

^Well, my original comment was about those gowns.
I donīt expect the label to be avant-garde (that was never their forte, was it?) but Iīd like to see on any HC creation the qualities I mentioned above, I just donīt see it here other than the ones you mentioned.

whether that fits the definition of hc or not, I think it's a gorgeous gown, although the colors and look has a very Lacroix feel to it.

I say we start a petition to change the name from 'couture project' to 'college project'.
