 i found out about the sequins..they say those are usually made of plastic i guess they buy them clear (like white) and then dye it themselves we can use a dye for polyester, which will dye plastic too.. it's very toxic thoughdid you get the dresses you ordered?  i was wondering if you could tell me about the knotted dresses, if they stitch the knots in place (i mean imagine someone's child unravelling the clothes  ) |

Gius, thank you for that! Do you mean that Dries' sequins are toxic
 or do they use a special dye?re: the knotting: Do you mean the skirts or the dresses? The dresses have actual knots (two narrow ends tied together) and I don't think they are stitched. The knots are very dense though....it would be hard for a child to pick them apart. They may be stitched on the inside, but somehow, that seems unlikely, knowing Dries. I am still trying to figure out the skirts, because they seem more twisted than knotted (i.e., there are no "ends") Now that I am thinking about it, it's strange they say that the knotting was inspired by India....because there is no visible knotting in traditional Indian clothing (at least that I have seen). It's all tucking, wrapping, pleating, and folding. When there are knots, they are just to hold the bottom layer in place, and usually not visible.

It's the dye that's toxic
 but I hear it creates really brilliant colours. I haven't learnt how to use it yetThat's really cool to hear about the knots I remember hearing the clothes are so thin they can fit into a little pocket-sized bag.. So, it could be a reason they can create the knots so tightI looked at the collection again and you're right.. some of the skirts seem twisted. I was reading about 'saris' in India a little while ago and it's true they don't really say that they use knots.. It's mostly draping, and it's tucked into a tight-fitting garment the person wears under all the fabrics. ...So I'm guessing it's the draping effect that Dries is going for, not the knots... Also you can see how for some of the shirts/dresses, the knot is placed somewhere high which would create these U-shape folds in the fabric All the knots and twists seem placed in certain places to create interesting folds and draping over the body... I think that's what they go for in Indian clothing. What a cool way to make clothing! Oh just read the style.com review for this collection...
They say the Indian inspiration was through the paisley and all the beadwork/embroidery  Who knows why Dries chose knots--very cool either wayI also wonder how the clothes will feel I have some polyester clothing which don't feel very nice on the skin and they also create a lot of static when I wear them (or when I wash and dry them in the machine)--Each time I go out in them, I always get zapped when I touch something metal. I also have polyester that feels great.. it's sportswear and stretchy.. but it also creates the static. These jackets in Dries' collection here seem so light-weight and thin.. I wonder how warm it is! And what exactly is inside the quilted ones, what they use for stuffing My schoolmate has a vest that's very light also, but she says it's so warm.. And She won't let me rip her vest open a bit to check if it's goosedown or what  I'm quite obsessive with wearing light things.. See I think this is quite average for Dries. I disagree with someone earlier who said it was just 'Dries being Dries' because a designer can be themselves but be themselves well, but I don't think that is the case this time.
I don't mind reference but the indian prints and the shapes are not a hint at the 1990s, they actually look like archived pieces, archived photos. I understand those were the glory days for a lot of these designers but rehashing an era, no matter how well done, means that a collection has to fall short of the descriptions 'inspiring' or 'excallent'. Or maybe it is a case of the aesthetic being a touch off for me. |

You have to wrap it around your body so many times, and then make so many pleats (especially if you are a small person) and then you have to tuck all those pleats into the petticoat.  I guess the addition of the petticoat was the result of british colonial influence...I would prefer to just "wrap and go," like with a sarong. Or like with Dries' knots....

I had a chance to see the new arrivals yesterday. I was a little disappointed to be honest. it was a bit dull, frumpy and lifeless to me. the quilted skirt and jackets we nice but too blah to justify the pricetag. there was a long black sweater dress I loved but it was going to pill easily. the cement sheer tunic with purple swirls was a standout; the cut, the colors and the fabric still have me thinking about it, unfortunately it seemed very fragile to wear often enough.
I can't wait to see the "monkey" sweater and the leather pants. anyone else have opinions on after seeing it in person? Last edited by luckyme : 30-07-2007 at 09:23 AM. |

They're ok. Some of the pieces I would never EVER wear. And some, I would be nothing but happy to. Which means this line has a HUGE range, which I think is a good thing.
