LA Fashion Week -Themes for shows...

Out of Fantasy Land

QVC, CFDA Initiative Continues With Showcase

Brioni Taps Ortiz as Creative Director

Jones Selects Model Teachers

Fashion week may still be in its nascent stages here, but that doesn't mean its designers were born just yesterday. As for these Angelenos' inspiration, it comes as little surprise that California's natural (and not-so-natural) resources — the sea, the sun and the cinema — are fueling their looks for spring.
"'Alice In Wonderland.'" — Petro Zillia
"Our love for Southern California with its great outdoors." — Ashley Paige
"The lost city of Atlantis, fantasy with reality."* — Kevan Hall
"Childhood and hazy memories of youth." — Yoo Lee, Saja
"Tales of early European contact with the 'noble savage' civilizations of the Pacific Islands." — Coco Klicks
"Jamaica, with its water, heat and vibrant ocean colors, mixed with elements of dance-hall competitions."— Pegah Anvarian
"The enchantress, a mysterious woman of great charm and fascination." — Sue Wong
"Sixties ingenues like Marianne Faithfull and Mia Farrow." — Sheri Bodell
"A modern-day Georgia O'Keeffe." — Eduardo Lucero
"Richard Avedon meets Barbara Stanwyck." — Louis Verdad

i highlighted the ones that appeal to me most...

I'm upset with LA fashion week. Ever sense Merceds took over it seems to have become all about the commercial brands and amost all the good indie designers get cut out. If they ever want a credible fashion week they are going to need to suport the yound designers more.

Do you know when Mercedes-Benz took over LA fashion week, Spacemiu? I volunteered backstage last March for (I think) Samora...The designer was an Asian lady and it was her first show, she was so excited and gave all the volunteers free sweaters. It was a great experience.

When you're a big European brand, everyone comes to you. They've already shown in Milan or Paris, and they're not about to stuff the whole collection on a plane to go show it again in LA. They've already been seen by all the stars, stylists, buyers and journalists they need to be seen by.

I think ti was like 2 years ago may be. There are still some good people showing of coarse and Gen Art always shows good designers. But befor MB it seemed like it was all really DIY, shows in alleys and stuff with much more creative clothes.

Then what about New York? They don't come to NY either? Then if you work in fashion in LA then you won't have a chance to work with those big European brands? That sucks!!! I hate the plain classic LA style. Then you have to be in Europe to watch their shows or work for them???

It makes sense because a fashion show is an incredibly expensive production. You have to pay for modelling talent, backstage talent, hair, makeup, invitations, music, lighting, blah blah blah et cetera. We're talking thousands upon thousands upon thousands of dollars. Not even the mega-brands can afford to do that more than once per collection.
