Matthew Ames
I came across the web site for rising Paris-based Hyeres participant,Matthew Ames whilst surfing the new Cristofoli Press web site. Never saw the last collection but I must say I'm liking his work quite alot thus far. Only two collections already...first one is a bit too cartoonish for me personally, but lovely nontheless. He used old children's bed linens for some of these pieces....hence the Smurf's shirt :p

Unfortunately,I can only give the link since I can't pull images from it nor could I find any through the web anywhere.

But I think he's extremely promising. A little bit in the same vein of Bernhard/Jensen/Wijnants....perhaps even a bit of early V&R. And this makes two really good American designer's who are based elsewhere....Thomas Engel Hart being the other.

I'm not so sure on it tbh...it's a little too eccentric for my liking... thankyou for bringing it in though Scott.

You're both very welcome

Yeah, the first one is very quirky and kitsch....the second however,I like most because we get to see his technique and I think he's got quite a bright future ahead of him. I really like the colour blocking and the shapes echo a certain Christian Wijnants.

I just read in the latest issue of Nylon(as they have an article on him)that Matthew did a stint at Jurgi Persoons which he says formalised his style....now that I look, his cutting technique is very much like that of Jurgi! Plus,he's got a bit of that fantastique/naivite that Jurgi did.

that's interesting, scott. i now see how are they paralleled, not just in the cutting technique and naivety but also the use of bold colours, fabrics and the houndstooth prints, particularly reminded me so much of jurgi.

thanks for sharing the info, scott.

Yes. But thankfully,it's only skill that appears similar. The overall style is quite different. Apart from certain elements,Jurgi had alot more texture and his style was a bit moodier.

However,it's really brilliant to see an American talent with that kind of technical sensibility. Jurgi was always so amazing at construction, cutting and dressmaking skills. Probably the best of his peers.

You're welcome,battles

Does anyone know where he has vanished? I did a little research about him and couldn't find any news on him after 2010-2011 when he was showing at NYFW. Is he still in the industry?

Curious as well, really enjoyed his designs! Especially when they were in Encens Magazine!
