I think the F/W 04 one is the most "Givenchy" collection Macdonald has done.

I agree that McQueen's Spring 01 collection for Givenchy was his best, and Fall 03 for MacDonald, but what I still do not understand is why they would hire people that are known for outlandish designs...Maybe Galliano, and McQueen hadn't established their signature looks yet, but what about MacDonald? What did they expect?

I actually loved some of the things McQueen did at Givenchy. Those first few examples shown were from his last collection which was kinda "last hoorah" if u know what I mean. He actually did some really beautiful things while he was there......case in point.

f/w 99 couture. That collection got horrible reviews because the garments were all presented on translucent mannequins. I actually loved some of the pieces.

It's not Macdonald's fault. Remember it's all about Givenchy! That haunting name just does not bode well for any designer!

They should just close down Givenchy, it seems like no one can do anything right by the house. I'm actually tired of the old names, once someone dies or drops out or gets a new job or whatever, their names should go with them. Otherwise, people just sit around worshipping their dead names and judging designers on whether or not they've created something like they would had they not been dust in the ground already. Both McQueen and Micky D have individual lines that present a pointed, strong point of view. To try to squeeze them into that old Breafast At Tiffany mode is absurd. Somehow, though, demanding that kind of trickery out of designers, who are artists, seems acceptible to many.

Is Givenchy purposely trying to ruin their house by making life difficult for their designers? It seems both McQ and MacD complained about the control clamped down on the creative process by head honchos...

Having to be true to the house aside, McQueen did a better job. No doubt. To quote mikeijames, again, "alexander mcqueen has an eye that macdonald does not." Plus MacDonald's collections were so transparent and trying hard. You could totally see the flaws. Not to mention weak too. Case in point: Spring 2002 HC, Fall 2002 HC, Spring 2003 HC, Fall 2003 HC and Spring 2004 HC and all the RTW collections.

Don't forget that Mcqueen is from Central St. Martins and Julien is not! That, i guess, does make a huge difference. (that's why my mom always says that a good education matters)

Totally agree with what you and mikeijames said. McQueen has a couture sensibility when it comes to ready to wear, plus he has the skill and imagination which in this day and age, is very necessary especially for couture.
