Yes, but the point is that H&M and others are already selling the stuff! For instance, you can see so many people with DH-esque style on the streets and 99.99% of them are NOT wearing actual Dior pieces.

When designers collaborate with high street companies, they won't be bringing you revolutionary style breakthroughs. They serve up a composite style that just as well could be put together by any design team worth their salt. Any designer or stylist can put together a collection of pieces based upon previous works/a specific style designed by someone else.

Evolving the style and coming up with new twists is harder though, that's what makes a designer stand out. And what we see in these collaborations is not evolution but "greatest hits". You won't get the hottest, freshest, best styles from high street collaborations.

Hmm...AM would be good for H&M I think.

I think Prada holds a level of sophiscation that would not fit well in the young trendy H&M stores.

i'd love for ALL designers to do this sort of thing...
just the way some have also been doing it for la redoute...

i think it's a great way to democratize fashion and make it accessible to the masses...

beautiful designs should not be available only for the rich...
style should not come with a pricetag attached...

...
i hope to see more availablity and distribution of affordable fashion...
with style...

I totally agree....I would love to be able to purchase some less expensive designs from varying designers, via H&M.

Didnt Phillipe Starck said some famous quote about design for the masses?

I love that concept, softie! It's def. on the top of MY manifesto!

Now .. about some comments ... I agree with Lena that it wud be so much better to see up-and-coming designers thrown into the mix and designing for H&M ..

What you mentioned about not buying H&M even tho your beloved Dries did H&M, well babe .. I'd say the exact same words if you love a designer that works for a label with low quality and bad fit.

I wudnt wear it and the designer would loose a lot of credibility and fandom -from my point of view-.

So yeah ... I agree .. I haven't seen a single piece of H&M in my entire life ... (No H&M here) .. but I've heard comments on the poor quality and finishes ... even if my idol McQueen embarqued (sp?) to follow Stella's footsteps for a crappy brand ... it wud be a huge no-no on my book.

Well I think any designer collaberations with a high street store should only do clothes and not accesories- the designers ideas can translate in cheaper clothes- but accesories-esp bags- are not about look and more about status, and if there are cheaper versions of designer bags- than the real bags will loose thier appeal. and cheap shoes just look cheap!

oh boy...
a bag that can give you 'status'...
that is a whole other can of worms....

good luck with that...
i am afraid it is only the 'illusion' of status that people are buying...
which means people are being seriously ripped off and sucked in by the marketing machine...

a bag can't give you status...
you have to earn that...
sorry for being off topic...but that's the truth...

You assume that status is a quality rather than a judgement.

I'm not saying a bag gives you status- I phrased that badly

I'm just saying the motivations behind buying a designer handbag are altogether different from the motivations for buying a piece of designer clothing.

You may wear a piece of designer clothing because you think the style is particularly unique, or special, or the fit is particularly flattering on you.

But when you wear a designer handbag, you do so to elevate your outfit. (at least, I do) Everything you're wearing may be from Banana Republic, but when you pair it with an Hermes Birkin, it gives you a certain je-ne-sais-quois, and makes your entire outfit look to be of the same quality and workmanship of the bag.

I love some of the looks that are shown on the runway, and I would love to, (and often do) see very similar styles in the chain stores I shop.

These I wear and then dispose of when the trend dies- without feeling that I've spent too much.

But when I see similar styles to designer bags, I am not at all interested. Though the style, or shape, or color may be the same as the original, it lacks the quality and craftmanship.

in essence- I buy clothes for thier looks-

I buy bags for their quality.

Why should designers not do this on the high street?

I don't see why people have such a big problem with it.

Are you the one's actually feeling ripped off?? Is that why? The Stella line was not that interesting I did however buy the puffball skirt, because it was of much better quality than regular H&M, the hype will die down, but at the end of the day, the clothes were of better quality than regular H&M, I just find it really 'snobbish' for people to object so loud, about designers doing cheaper lines.

Style is not about money, the quality of what these designers do for the mass market can never compare, fashion should be fun, not taken so serious.
