Balmain is not overpriced ,Balmain is just expensive ,Balmain is haute couture. Take a look at the FW 2012 collection:

those pieces from the recent collection, yes. they'll be very expensive cause of the craftmanship, materials, etc.

those thin, fragile, ripped t-shirts from a while ago at 1000+ euros were ridiculously overpriced.

...Plus those pearls would have been applied by small hands in India, and not at Lesage.

A new one from Balmain straight from theoutnet.com

€28,556

vogue

The funny thing is that the jacket is now retailed at €5,711.20 I think we can say Balmain puts a x10 in pricing their pieces

^That always amazes me too when I look at Balmain pieces on Theoutnet, how much of a price drop they actually take, It's a completely different discussion I could branch out into like how much do they buy it in at and then the mark up for them to drop it by thousands, not hundreds and then why don't Balmain reduce the prices slightly, but the last is a very stupid question, because the answer is so obvious, so they retain a certain client base....

Exactly, like doesn't Balmain loose money for dropping all that money? At this rate, they really should just lower the prices.

I think not. With prices like these it has more of an air of exclusivity. The richest of the rich (and they must be not smart too, who'd pay that much for that?!) buy these kinds of things to feel more elitist. Silly but true.

We've had the exclusivity discussion in this thread a hundred thousand times before; only the rich can afford designer clothes, but even the rich would be thinking twice about buying a garment for that price - and that is exactly why people buy it; so they'll be the only one... in their minds.
A high price means more exclusivity.

It is extremely unlikely that that hideous Balmain jacket cost over €5,711 to produce, therefore Balmain are likely to still be making a profit with the much lower sale price.

During clearing sale it is usual to sell products a price that often doesn't cover the unit costs because otherwise the company would have to pay storage costs till forever.... The costs for the balmain jacket is naturally a bit higher than average designer jackets as balmain cant make use of syngergy effects since they keep the production volume so low (unlike burberry, versace and other high priced mass designers).... It's still overpriced but as crying diamonds said, they're using the price to signal exclusivity... They dont buy just a jacket, they buy a certain lifestyle... Same belongs to apples iphone, which maybe costs $50 to produce ...
