And thank you birdofparadise once again for your really thoughtful comments. Whenever you say something about Raf, I feel immediately as if I agree. While the garments still do not appeal aesthetically to me because of all the newspaper clipping like text and emphasis on T-shirts, they are now really interesting to me and I realize how he has used this elements in a purposeful way. I like this collection a whole lot better now. After the attacks on 9/11, I felt that not enough artists were immediately responding to what had happened--I was disappointed by that. Wish I had seen coverage of this show then. Fashion can be a very powerful medium to convey a message. another person who I think does it well (although he is sometimes not as good at it as Raf is) is Miguel Adrover, one of my favorite designers. |

Raf has become one of my very fav. designers:-) The clinical cut and use od intensive colours, the black prints on white, just very "R" in this collection:-) The blk short jkt is one of my fav looks. Somehow I think the SS05 collection has the energy that is seen here, but of course it was done in other way. |

i don't know why people all over the world seem to love Raf Simons. Isn't the minimalistic, plain, black versus white stuff a little overdone? Come on, all these Belgian designers seem to be depressed or something. Personally, i prefer more classical designers or slutty designers, cause at the moment, the way things are going in the world, with all that fuss about islam terrorism, i need a dose of Paris Hilton in my life. Or otherwise, i think i'll have to return to the nineteenth with my wardrobe to find some stability on a political terrain. I chose for the first one. Forget worries, let's get decadent, now's the time to live people !!! Get some luxury while you still can, get over all that typically Belgian realism, with an exception for Van Noten (because he's still very classical and has a very oldish style).

wow...fashion whore...thanks for your post...
while i can't think of too many things in the world i am disgusted by as much as a spoiled little rich girl with fake hair and a fake tan prancing around in public with no underwear ..it's interesting to hear from the perspective of someone who actually likes that sort of thing.... because for the life of me...i haven't been able to see the appeal ... i guess it's the ostrich syndrome... let's all bury our heads in the sand and pretend everything is fine... let's all dance around and ignore the people getting blown up because it's not happening to us... i have never understood how to ignore reality .. without doing some sort of mind-altering drugs, that is... but maybe drugs is a big part of that culture... total denial... i mean...here is poor little raf simons with barely any funding... trying so hard to make some sort of statement... (even if the clothes are kind of boring)... and there is paris hillton...with ALL OF THAT MONEY..!!! who could REALLY make some sort of difference with all of that at her disposal... and yet this is how she chooses to live her life... prancing around and partying in LA LA land... sheesh!!... no wonder so many people around the world hate america...  ...they must think we're all like that...

Haha, people can have such strong reactions. I think that when you think you HATE something though it's good to pick it apart and give critical feedback rather than just saying, "Ugh, it's terrible!" You can say that too, if you want.
I guess same goes for liking something.. Anyway, in response to fashion_whore's comments, everything is overdone. Isn't classical, slutty stuff overdone? Arent there tons of terrible and trashy designers out there? Like I've said before--everything has its own place. Would you rather these Belgian designers (many of whom aren't into minimalism at all...) be silenced, or drop off the face of the earth? I think it's important for everyone's voice to be heard. I've said this all before, somewhere else so I won't go too far into it again. Your opinion, that you personally don't like this stuff, matters-- but it's not for you to say whether or not it deserves to exist. Of course I have these reactions, too (I hate this and it has no value) and I've probably expressed them in tFS before...I don't know. I guess I'm just a hypocrite, but at least one who's trying to be critical and constructive rather than simply reactive. |
