The audience filed in to the accompaniment of Mark Leckey’s cult 1999 film, Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore, and its mesmerizing footage of rave kids set the scene for an exultant trip down memory lane for Raf Simons. “I felt like having fun,” he said backstage, after a show that featured many of the elements—the narrow silhouettes, the sleeveless tops—that we've come to think of as classic Raf.

Naturally, though, he was also quick to point out that his collection was as much about the future as it was about happy memories. That was evident in the windcoats with their floating volumes, garments akin to those worn by the astral pioneers in David Lynch’s Dune. But it was Simons' obsession with shorts that most clearly showed this prescient and incisive designing mind at work. Shorts will always be associated with the schoolboy, and that’s where Simons started, with suits that looked like uniforms. Then the shorts transmogrified into style statements involving wraps, waistbands, and pleating.

To take one sartorial element, then de- and reconstruct it is the sort of cerebral activity Simons loves to engage in—and somehow manages to make consistently fascinating. Part of the charm was the staging of this show: After the usual single-model walk-out, a file of young men would offer variations on a theme (color-blocked sleeveless tees, for instance, or shorts suits). In their uniformity, they paradoxically emphasized individuality. Don’t ask how Simons achieves such effects—put it down to sublime empathy.

I'm familiar with some of Raf's old work and but this strikes me as having more polish. I'd often seen some of his stuff at the stores and scoffed at how I didn't like the final production, even as recently as this current Spring season at Seven right now. I would love to see if I could own those balloon shorts, but I fear that in them, my skinny legs will make me look even more like an ostrich! Some of those wide pleated shorts look a bit too much like women's skorts to me!

These pants, however, I can (and hope to) work:

say what you want. there is no question that the "kid" is Good. better than Good............ exeptional if you will.
For him its not about flash. its not about trends, its about giving dressing a new perspective, its about helping you to understand that there are many possibilities and thats what makes him one of the best at what he does

It's very early Raf, but I'd say better maybe...

The shorts are really cool. And the shirts rock.

Fully agree! The block tees are going right back to his s/s 2000 collection - although there's more colour variation now. And he's done the absolutely amazing jackets again - so all in all a bit of recycling, a bit of re-interpretation, and a couple of new ideas. Being a longstanding Raf fan I can only love this!

as someone already stated, this is a lot more "young" and wearable compared to the jil sander f/w collection...it's really not that original, but i kind of like it

Yeah, I'm really in love with almost every pant in the collection. I have really long legs so pants end up being my most important garment. Simons knew exactly what I wanted. The shorts aren't something I could pull off so well (except that last pair that was a bit skinnier than the rest, I will be getting something similar). The stripped knits are all amazing and I can't wait to wear them with skinny black trousers.

This is the only collection so far that I could imeddiately spot pieces I wanted.
