I never liked him until recently.

What I really didn't understand is why would he label himself as haute couture...

He did not merely "label himself", what he did was Alta Moda, the Italian equivalent of Haute Couture. Fausto Sarli was a master when it came to tailoring, like most Italian designers worth their salt, but he excelled at creating soft and fluid entrance-making dresses. I remember his beautiful collections of the mid 90s: each a master class in style and know-how. Hope to see a retrospective of his work soon. I shall miss him.
