This is stunning. Seriously. I would love to see these pieces being worn on the red carpet.

It's like I've gone to heaven and come back That gold should look absolutely nasty but those girls are so talented it's insane. The beauty and detailing is overwhelming. The golden dress is so beautifully crafted it's not even funny.

derivative, indeed...
you can add mary mcfadden to that list as well...

i don't even mind when something is referenced...
as long as it is improved upon...
but this isn't better than the real thing...
not even close...

ah well- at least it isn't completely horrible...
it certainly could be worse...
but a couple of them really look like some halloween costume put together with staples and glue...
more like costume than clothing, imho...

the only aspects that i really loved is in the sixth photo of the first post with three dresses on display. again, even there a bit vionnet-esque actually but at least those had their own spin.

to be honest,i like what they do but i don't really get all the fuss either. most everything they've done has essentially been on foundations of what's already been done and seen. even their knitwear, which i tend to be fond of. and it goes beyond mere classics, traditions and history.....much of it has distinctly been done by other designers.

i'm glad other people aren't that into this collection. I was afraid to post after reading all those "i'm crying" reviews, thinking "there must be something I'm missing". I'm sure it's well constructed, and the gold gown is quite nice... but i just don't get rodarte. from what i see, their runway collections are borderline couture anyway, so i don't see why this is necessary.

It hardly needs to be said that Rodarte is not aesthetically pleasing to everyone. I think a lot of their pieces look frumpy. But it's the sheer amount of detail and craft that they put in that makes them appreciable. Their clothes are not for the eyes only.

Has anyone found closeups? I'm not blown away by the dresses but I would love, love, love to see close ups of the work. They look beautifully crafted.

It's kind of ironic, just the other day I was thinking to myself "Rodarte should do haute couture"
Their regular collections are imo already pretty high fashion and edgy in their own way. And after seeing pictures of the dresses for Black swan that one exhibit had, it just makes sense. I'd just love to see them actually showing these at Paris haute couture fashion week in a real show, with the music and runway decor it would be magical. (but I can keep dreaming before that ever happens...)

This is the sloppiest couture i've ever seen. Just came from the McQueen exhibit today, THAT is couture, not this dashed together nonsense.

Yes, I see hand sewn release pleats -- sewn rather poorly. I see some "couture" draping, but I've seen the likes on Project Runway as well. It may as well be stapled and glued together.

There is no lyricism in line or unity in form, not the kind you'd see from people who know what they are doing. Instead, these dresses, like most of their clothes, look comprised of disjointed unrelated elements collaged without consideration or foresight. Some look quite disastrous, others are actually enthralling... but due to the overall poor sensibility that grand effect seems only accidental.

These girls have a vision but they have no craft. They can't cut and they can't sew and they don't know fabrics and it's quite evident in their clothes, even more so in their "couture". I'd be interested in seeing what they could come up with once that is changed. Until then, the emperor still has no clothes, even if you show it in Florence.
