I love the different uses of the scallop shape - it is very un-NYFW isn' it? But I'm glad because it has injected something different in an otherwise unremarkable fashion week. I should say it's bland but something about it is very appealing. The cream coat with the back ruffle is gorgeous.

NEW YORK, February 8, 2006 – Kate and Laura Mulleavy showed a 21-piece collection today that was exceptional in its sophistication. The self-taught designers are obsessed with how clothes are made—stitch by stitch, bead by bead. They'll study Chanel couture to learn a technique, painstakingly hand-stitch a dress, chase down rhinestones from the twenties… whatever it takes to realize their vision. For fall they said they were "intent on doing very soft abstractions," so they worked their signature "waves"—ruffles of fabric which seem to float on the surface of garments—onto jackets worn with slim pants, and into the folds of accordion-pleated dresses. You could call it poetry in motion.

Each piece seemed to have been conceived in the round, with the back of the garments as carefully ornamented as the front. One pleated dress with quivery tendrils fore was artfully shredded aft. A scallop-trimmed coat, meanwhile, was a feat of detailed stitching; each flap, the sisters explained, was satin-backed, lined, and faced. Of course, all this handwork translates into some bracing prices, and Rodarte is emphatically not for day dressing. But the pleasure the sisters clearly take in their work is contagious.

here a review on their show, from wwd for today

Quote:
Rodarte: Trekking up to East 79th Street is a haul-and-a-half in the middle of an overstuffed fashion week, especially to see a collection that's only three seasons old. It speaks volumes, then, that retailers such as Julie Gilhart and Linda Fargo made the journey for Rodarte. And designers Laura and Kate Mulleavy didn't disappoint. Picking up where they left off last season, they revisited their pinked and frilled cocktail dresses and evening gowns. Loose chiffon strips, running the length of some looks, undulated and fluttered like sea kelp as models walked — an intentional and intriguing visual trick. It was lovely on the waisted sheaths, but read as fussy on the skinny pantsuits, an idea that Stefano Pilati successfully toyed with at YSL last season. Such intense detail — including the twisted and bunched rosettes that beautifully crowded the back of a long white number — takes patience and incredible effort, something the Mulleavys must have in spades.
i dont get the 'three seasons old' comment

wow, really amazing! i love all the coats!
the collection should be presented in Paris next season, too much of this reminds me of designs from Paris.....

Self taught? Talented indeed!
This is already better than much out there if only for the quality and feminine details. They need more support so we can see what they're really capable of.
Only drawback are the girls themselves. SLOPPY! They look like janitors. Set an example, especially when you're trying to push such prim looks! They were just missing the mops and buckets....

definitely seems out of place in NY...
which makes it stand out...
but it seems rather stiff and 'old'...
i just can't think of an appropriate occassion for any of these clothes...
...

maybe as 'mother of the bride'...
