September 14, 2010, 2:38 pm Back to Nature at Rodarte

By ERIC WILSON The Rodarte spring collection was undoubtedly a hit of New York Fashion Week. The designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy could not even take their bow before they were overwhelmed by a rush of editors and retailers praising them to the heavens. Even Elijah Wood was climbing up a stairwell to congratulate the sisters.
Held in a Chelsea gallery, the show was largely a study in the Mulleavy signature medium of collage, and once again largely inspired by nature and the redwoods of Northern California. In the early looks, natural materials collided with elements that looked almost tribal. “We created the fabrics ourselves,” Kate Mulleavy said. Later in the show, there was a blur of dresses with blue and white patterns that looked alternately like toile, wallpaper, Delftware and china.
Several jackets seemed to be made of a stiff material that resembled foam printed to look like crocodile skin. The stiffness of fabrics seemed important, as several of the items — an apron dress and a short leather cape that jutted out from the breast — looked as if they were made of shifting tectonic plates.
“There are a lot of different elements,” Ms. Mulleavy said. “This is our amalgamation.”
One thing that stood out, literally, was the return of the car wash skirt, one of those 1960s crazes that comes back every few years.
“I don’t know where that came from,” Ms. Mulleavy said.

I like it a lot. It's a much more polished version of Rodarte. Looks like they've cleaned up a lot of the construction techniques so it all looks much more precise and much less....ethereal? But I don't think that's a bad thing at all.

Whoa, the first Rodarte collection in about 3 years that doesn't look like a total mess. In fact, this is actually quite good.
