Sandra Backlund

Swedish designer known for her intricate knits.

Quote:
"The handicraft process and the handmade feeling is very significant. I am interested in almost every traditional handicraft technique. For me it is the absolute challenge. All the levels of skills you have to pass before you can even think about starting to improvise. It is the real thing and everything that the modern fashion industry is not. I think it is important that we take responsibility and preserve ancient handicraft techniques which will die out if we do not carry them forward to a new level.

I always work with the the human body as a starting point. I am really fascinated by all the ways you can highlight, distort and transform the natural silhouette of the body with clothes and accessories. I construct my designs from a lot of small pieces which I attach to each other in different ways to discover the shape that I want. In that sense I guess you can say that I approach fashion more like a sculptor then a tailor. In my opinion clothes is the most democratic form of art. Something everyone do relate to, consciously or unconsciously."

Is the paper dress made of paper? Where did she get the hair for the human hair shirt?

^ Yes. And I have no idea from where she got the hair. A hairdresser?

I love her stuff! Very interesting approach.

These are from various collections/seasons. I think from a designer portait in some mag.

She's possibly one of the few designers that has found a craft, a technique that makes her easily recognizable (much like Sophia Kokosalaki). I think what's even better on top of that is that she manages to put it all together in a way that is also amazingly beautiful... I saw some of her stuff earlier on Diane Pernet's website and already thought it was breathtakingly beautiful... and it's only becoming better every season...
