I don't think the whole smile thing has to do with the Joker, I think it might have something to do with the whole pirate theme it looks like. In Pirates of the Caribbean, one of the characters has a "Glasgow smile" on one side of his face.

Either way, the whole idea seems a bit played out. The 5th look in #1 has me sold though...
