Vivienne Westwood redesigns Virgin Atlantic uniform

Iconic British designer Dame Vivienne Westwood has joined Virgin Atlantic in a 10-year partnership which will see an overhaul of all of the airline's uniforms.

Dame Vivienne Westwood is following in the footsteps of Julien Macdonald, Balmain, Pucci and Halston by designing airline uniforms.

The British designer has teamed up with Richard Branson's Virgin Atlantic airline to redesign the company's famed red uniforms, a collaboration which will run for 10 years and see a total overhaul of the uniform across all areas.

Westwood has gone for a "futuristic look" for the cabin crew uniform which references her enduring interest in Forties French couture cutting techniques as well as the Savile Row tailoring heritage. Sustainability was also a key factor in the design, meaning all uniforms will be produced using recycled materials with recycled polyester yarn made from used plastic bottles being a main component. Bags for members of the cabin crew will also be made of recycled materials - recycled canvas, reused roadside banners, unused leather off-cuts, and recycled brass - through the Ethical Africa Programme in collaboration with the International Trade Centre.

Uniforms for pilots will be unveiled later this year and all further employees within the company, from Clubhouse staff to the Virgin Holidays team, will also receive new outfits by the iconic designer.
The cabin crew uniforms unveiled today keep to the airline's traditional red theme, with the women's outfit formed of waist-cinching jacket and pencil skirt complete with "cheeky dart and double pleat at the back", and the men's a three-piece Savile Row-inspired suit in rich burgundy wool.

Interesting-- in concept.

I don't think it'll look remotely outstanding once it's on the actual crew. When people that don't really care for fashion are made to wear fashionable items, it rarely, if ever, turn out well. Crew are going to wear their own footwear, accessories, hairstyle, etc with this uniform and it's going to be a mess for the most part.
