The very first sentence says it all imo.
All of these people are watering down the meaning of the phrase fashion designer to the point where it's just another cheesy hyphenate in the world of showbiz. The title "fashion designer" used to mean something, now it's just a synonym for every star who either needs a career boost or thinks they have style.

^ Exactly, which really, really sucks. I love fashion design- and acting- but in a way now I feel like I need to choose one or another just because so many talentless hacks have destroyed the credibility of a hyphenate career.
On the same token, however, I think Milla Jovovich, Gwen Stefani, and the Olsen twins have proven that credible high fashion by celebrities can be done, so who knows?

It's interesting to read which celebrities are actually involved with the process. It's no shocker Paris doesn't do anything. I feel bad that her sister gets lumped in with her when Nicky is actually is involved with her line. I'm surprised to hear Gwen Stefani wouldn't promote her line in person and also surprised that JLo's ventures have failed somewhat.

I think pre-teens and tweens will, teenagers I think year by year are becoming savvier. It's not really cool to have a celeb designed item if you're 16 and idolize cory kennedy or if you're 16 and read Teen Vogue. I'm surprised that Chick by Nicky isn't licensed and i'm surprised she's so hands on with her Nicholai range and it's SO crap in terms of design quality since I think she's actually half decent at styling.
I honestly believe (and hope I'm proven right) that this is just a fad of the noughties....celebs will sort of kill themselves off (as they are starting to do) as they saturate the market more and more. If you have 5 lines, all by Disney stars, all sold at the same shop, guaranteed at least half will fail. And when it's not so profitable anymore, backers won't be approaching celebs and only those who can actually design or retain a market will succeed. |

I think you hit it on the head Meg. As someone in her late teens, I know that none of my friends think that a Paris Hilton bag is a big deal at all, but when someone walks in with an authentic Prada bag or even rocks A/X Armani Exchange jeans, they are really doing something.
The only time I buy celeb clothing is when it's comfortable and affordable, and ten times out of ten it's for the garment, not the name. Come to think of it, SJP for Steve and Barry's might be the only celeb clothing I own...
