'Where the Boys Are Is Where the Girls Should Be' (NYT) by Cathy Horyn
Great article in today's NYT by Cathy Horyn. I agree with her on Raf and Hedi, and especially on menswear as becoming the driving force behind 21st century fashion. Funny how an arena that was once merely about suits and dress shirts is now so much more.

I don't know, i still think women's wear is generally more creative, but I'm VERY glad men'swear is having a moment.

I love how she lumped Dries & Paul Smith together - I love both collections for the very similar ideas (despite some very obvious differences in approach) of using wild color and pattern mixes. And I totally agree withh her about Hedi & Raf, two collections from designers I really didn't care to buy, but whose collections this show season are spurring me to give their racks a second look. Thanks for the article, M-o-M!

Yeh, I think womens allows more streams of creativity...but really I've been thinking that a successful mens collection can be as creative if not more so because menswear on the level the that we are discussing is more of a challenge. So many people I know who have made the decision to design womens instead of mens say its because mens is "boring". Well, yes doing menswear the way it has always been done since after the french revolution has been the same, but for styling. Yet, that seems to present more of a challenge and a new opportunity to create something inspired, yet realistic for wearing. I think that challenge is exciting and mysterious.

Some of this article I don't agree with, some I do. Somethinge else just came to my mind, if Dries was trying evoking Russian intelligentsia of the 70's, why the hell would he be playing Paul Auster? Why not Josef Brodsky or another prominent Russian author of that period? |

I think it may be a comfort level--I'd think about wearing Marc any day before I touched junkie glam from Dior Homme. I don't want to look like I walked out of Kate Moss' birthday party, who cares about Kate Moss?
Menswear is having a moment but thank the gods that all designers aren't jumping onto that same bandwagon. While most may consider it encouraging that Miss Horyn sees the benefit in menswear developing a daring panache in the same vein as womenswear, I think many of the problems that exist in menswear can be attributed to just that. I also believe she may be hinting at the development of more androgenous lines period, where a designer would not have to show a seperate mens and womens line because the pieces can be worn by both sexes and yet not seem unisex. Dior strives a little in that direction and I think its interesting from a design point of view--but still...
