Without A Cary-Robert Cary-Williams Story

Quote:
21 August 2008, 05:34PM
NOT content with shaking up the London fashion scene, Robert Cary-Williams is now turning his rebel's eye to art.
From burnt-down furniture to freehand sketches and film clips shot in Iceland, the designer has created a series of works for East End Lights, the new artistic project launching at Beyond Retro's Cheshire Street store on August 28.
"I've worked with Beyond Retro in the past was approached by them to launch the project. Sarah Jane Surtees at Beyond Retro curated the idea based on a street art project in Melbourne," says Cary-Williams.
In support of the venture, he has also created the limited edition "Hackey v. Hockney" T-shirt using his infamous "shotgun" printing technique, which will be available at Beyond Retro from the exhibit's opening night or online via www.restlessartists.com.
And even the T, Carey-Williams confides, was suitably avant-garde in its inception.
"I saw a man in Broadway Market wearing an 'I Love Hackney' T-shirt and he told me he got it from the Hackney Museum. I thought they would be good to work with for the project," he explains. "But when I was stamping them an ink stamp accidentally covered the A to make HOCKNEY - so I just went with it."

I like to think he's only putting shows to rest for a while, he seems to be wanting to explore his creativity through other channels and I like that, even though his collections were truly something.. one of the few shows in London I religiously followed.

the burnt-down furniture sounds like something we would expect from him, I cannot wait to see what it looks like..

thanks a lot for posting this, Scott!!.

^i know and i totally respect these endeavours as well. been missing him though.

the furniture sounds like something i would love to have in my future flat...

what's more....that t'shirt in the same vein is very him too. i always love his t'shirt designs. with the stampings and the bullet holes.....such an aggressive measure yet such a delicate texture.
