i think crests are family emblems...
my classmate has one, and everyone in her family uses the same crest

thank you for the posts/links, runner
it was the first photo that i really liked
the black obi at the back, with the pattern
it looks very stiff too

yes softgrey they all have meanings.
they are plants/flowers, creatures, nature, architecture, tools, etc.
there are standards, and also many variations of them.
for example, this is one of the most famous crest-patterns.
it's paulownia.

its variations here
http://www.asgy.co.jp/cgi-bin/kmnlist.pl?kiri

this is a batty arrangement of it. I remember I liked it as a kid.

that crest posted in # 103 represents pitching (stone paving).
http://www.asgy.co.jp/cgi-bin/kmnlist.pl?isi

fleur de lis is lily?
far east take on lily theme
http://www.asgy.co.jp/cgi-bin/kmnlist.pl?ran

some of the shapes on the dress may be from some other place than crest.
I think I have seen it but I cannot put my finger on it.

you are welcome gius
yes it's family thing called ka-mon
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mon_(crest)

about the formal dress in the first image, do you feel dignity and sensuality coexist there?
since apparently that's the main source of inspiration for this collection.

you mean the kimono?
dignity yes
and also restraint

but you feel sensuality in this collection i think

runner ,do you know if the black obi's pattern is a print? or is it woven...
the pattern is shinier...

you are welcome softgrey

yes gius I mean the black kimono sorry.
thought you guys mean formal attire in general regardless of style by formal dress.
probably it's not print. it's textural pattern.
it's japanese style full dress.
but the woman is wearing mourning.
the black kimono with black obi is traditionally supposed to be the most formal mourning combo.
naturally there is dignity about it.
but sometimes it could exude sensuality at the same time (I don't know if it works that way about the western style. also there should be a matter of context).
and this time yohji didn't deny that, and made this collection.
I guess in a way this is yohji's take on the theme eros and thanatos.

ah ! i was thinking it looks like mourning dress...
i didn't know if the japanese use black for mourning, like in europe

i'm not so sure what is the meaning of sensuality actually ...
i don't know if sensuality can be shown in clothing...

of course that mourning dress called mofuku itself is not sensual, but with flesh and blood,
and maybe jet-black sleek hair, for example.
something dignified and serious about death could irradiate the wearer's life
like light contrasted by darkness, only nape of the neck can make it sensual even more than lots of skin.
it's that kind of quality or feel of the mofuku that he seems to have tried to incorporate here, in a not grave but light way.
sensuality or even eroticism that dignity, grace, elegance, chic, and such can waft sometimes unexpectedly.
(sorry I may be using some words wrongly. it's difficult for me to understand the subtle differences of the meanings, definitions of adjectives or abstract nouns)

Yohji is always so strong at reinterpreting Paris couture in a way that is completely nonchalant, wearable and 'street-credible', while at the same time retaining the grand guesture and grandeur... Rei might be more provocatively-minded and boundaries-pushing, but I'm always so stunned to see how Yohji makes a long bustier dress feel almost casual and not madame-looking.
